Gloucester end Glasgow's hopes

Gloucester turned around a half-time deficit to score a deserved 19-6 win over Glasgow in the Heineken Cup at Kingsholm on Sunday.

The home side trailed 6-0 at half time but tries from Charlie Sharples and Alex Brown added to a handful of penalties from Nicky Robinson as Gloucester dominated the second period.

The result ends Glasgow's hopes of making it into the quarter finals while Gloucester may still cling the slimmest of chances of progressing to the knock out stages.

Glasgow have never won in England in the Heineken Cup and despite a strong start the Magners League leaders didn't have enough steam to get past a Gloucester side hell bent on revenge after last week's defeat at Firhill.

Under clear skies but in freezing temperatures, the Scottish visitors had the better of the opening exchanges.

When number eight Richie Vernon break clear the Gloucester defence was stretched to the limit. Andrew Hazell slapped the ball down in a cynical attempt to halt the Glasgow attack, earning a yellow card.

Dan Parks stepped up and put Glasgow ahead from the ensuing penalty after a quarter of an hour.

The home set piece was struggling, giving away possession at the line-outs. The visitors were also making a real nuisance of themselves at the breakdown, stifling Gloucester's momentum on many an occasion.

The Cherry and Whites made few promising breaks in the first half but it would be Glasgow who led at the break after Parks added a neat drop goal just before the half-hour mark.

The teams headed for the sheds with the Scots leading 6-0 and Gloucester looking frustrated.

But the second half started in better fashion for the hosts as Nicky Robinson's penalty attempt bounced on and over the cross bar to make the scores 6-3 in the 42nd minute.

The addition of Greg Somerville to the Gloucester front row after the break had added some grunt to the home scrum and they were rewarded with a penalty on 50 minutes.

Robinson bisected the uprights to level the scores as Gloucester began to take control of the match.

Replacement flank Luke Narraway as equally making his presence felt and the home side broke the deadlock when right wing Charlie Sharples ran onto James Simpson-Daniel's offload and then had the strength to beat three defenders and muscle his way over the line in the corner for the game's first try.

With the momentum all Gloucester's, Robinson stretched the lead to 14-6 with his third penalty of the half.

Brown's try added the final nail in the Glasgow coffin as the hosts showed great continuity to keep the ball alive to allow the lock to finish in the same spot as his team-mate had a few minutes earlier.

Man of the match: James Simpson-Daniel deserves a mention for some strong, straight running, but on a soggy pitch, Gloucester skipper Gareth Delve's tireless graft earned our gong.
