A TV cameraman Quins

TV: Are there no boundaries?

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with television intrusion, dreadful disciplinary calls, dream teams and some very sad news...

Sunday newspapers are often known to occasionally come up with some of the more fanciful of scoops. But while The Independent's Sunday story about TV bosses wanting their commentators to be briefed on coaching gameplans and given access to the key moments of training sounds like just one of those flights of fancy, those of us who have been around long enough to watch TV's slow and painful encroachment upon the top flight will realise with a sense of grimness that this is probably serious.

In the beginning there were match highlights. Then there were post-shower interviews. Then there were post-match interviews, breathless monosyllabic vox pops with knackered players either determined to get to the sanctity of the dressing room and swallow defeat or celebrate victory; either way, knackered players for whom the last person they wanted to talk to was some grinning suited pundit. Even less so the lip-glossed vixens whose post-match questions got progressively more cretinous the younger and glossier the interviewers became. Some players even briefly rebelled... somewhere on youtube there's a terrific clip of Fred Michalak telling an interpreter that the question he had just faced was too stupid to answer and would the interpreter please make something plausible up.

Yet emanating in France, there came the excruciating notion of the in-match interview, a microphone thrust into the face of one of the anguished coaches during the game; a stream of inane questions thrown at him while he tries to pick apart each micromoment of his team's performance so as to be able to wring and coax the very best out of them. In other countries this was toned down to the half-time pitch exit interview, a heaving collection of grunts and gasps from players looking for the dressing room, a good slice of orange, glug of water and nip of rum as uncomfortable as it is uninformative.

And now, TV is about to not only intrude further into the game's private corners, it is also about to ask for - nay, insist on - access to the information that coaches spend nights, weeks, months working on and refining. Tactics and training moves are to be given to the pundits who have been 'sworn to secrecy' ('I promise I won't blab, honest'? Or an actual binding oath?) so that the pundits can - presumably- go 'Ahh yes, we used to do this when...' and thus refine their status among the stratospheric.

As Brian Smith so rightly retorts when asked about the possibility: "Something like the NFL Hard Knocks programme that follows a team in pre-season could work well. But I'm pretty sure the coaches would guard their tactics jealously. I wouldn't be keen on sharing our thought process or detailed preparation. It's sport, it's not Big Brother."

It's not Big Brother. It's long since time sports broadcasters stopped trying to make it so. The post-shower interview used to yield some good insight, everything since then has only served to show that athletes in the thick of it are not articulate nor glamorous.

Pundits earn a small fortune creating debating points for their viewers, but this move smacks of trying to remove that element of debate, trying to take away the process of second-guessing that sports viewers go through, that process with which we happily while away our time and money down the boozer on a Saturday afternoon.

One's own punditry is the best bit about being a sports fan. Trying to work out what coaches are trying to achieve and what the key elements of moves and structures are is why watchers watch. The secrecy of coaches' tactics and structures, their ability to plan surprises and cutting moves and durable defensive structures is why coaches coach. A move that opens up all the coaches' secrets and ruined viewers' analytical attempts of a Saturday afternoon.... just doesn't seem all that fun at all.

A week? One measly week for Ronan O'Gara? Once again the disciplinary takes a quick butchers at the fixture calendar and strikes a delicate balance between appearing to punish and making sure that the miscreant player is available for the international matches he might be required for and to hell with the law book.

It wasn't just a trip by O'Gara, it was a petulant and cowardly piece of retaliation, a kick masquerading as a trip. Both things all our first rugby coaches would have told us in our first training session are among the worst transgressions in the game.

One week. Once again, following a verdict, it seems it is the disciplinary panel that needs a citing.

Castrogiovanni to Toulon now? Because John Smit wasn't enough? Nor Carl Hayman, Bakkies Botha, Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau, Mathieu Bastareaud.... Rugby really does have its very own dream team, the looming possibility of a side in which every one of the starting XV could legitimately be - or in most cases, have been - considered the best in the world in his position.

All very good. But perhaps it's not such a horrific waste of money as it might be made out to be. There is a good thousand international caps' worth of experience behind the Toulon squad at the moment. In a couple of years, most of those caps will be in retirement, with a new generation of players coming to replace them.... just imagine what kind of an education those Toulon reserve players will have had during the Dream Team years.

Finally, the French rugby world has been rocked by the passing of Eric Béchu this week. Béchu, one of the French coaching fraternity's more colourful characters, has left a lasting legacy not only at Montpellier but also at Albi, where he was the Head Coach for 11 years including a memorable couple of seasons fighting astronomical odds in the Top 14.

The messages of condolence have come form far and wide, while Montpellier's fabulous performance on Saturday was a fitting send-off for the forwards coach who helped make Montpol genuine title contenders. All those who have felt his influence will remember him, most notably for his passion and loyalty. French rugby has lost a true rugby man.

I think Brian Moore says thinks, a lot of true rugby people believe, and that is why so many hate him. Scrum put ins, line out throws etc.

Eddie Butler is too intelligent for the maases, and as he is a double first in laguages, (one of them french), I believe he has the right to pronounce French names correctly!

The majority of the sky commentators don't know the simple maul laws, bleating why in a collapsed maul, the opponents of the team they are supporting!, don't relaes.

Urrgh, you don't have to in a collapsed maul!

Their knowledge is very poor.

I like Jon davies, at least he is a double test player, was good in union and league, where he also commentates. He gets emotional, but better than the false syncophantic sky guys.

Have to agree with the use of female commentators, some just don't know it.

The worst is the horrible Dot on S4C, I cringe when she is asking questions, let's hope she stays on S4C and does not graduate to prime time TV!

@jappers1983 - I quite like Rod Khafer's commentary, he's usually the grounded (and informed) counterpoint to the rest of the Aussie comedy show.

Think Brian Moore gets an undeserved hard time. I always find him to be an excellent commentator, and referee qualification shows as he make rules up or call it completely wrong, ie Stuart Barnes.

Also, who's the Irish guy who commentates for Sky? Never know what his name is but he's funny, articulate, knows his stuff, nearly always does the Ulster games....top commentator! Justin Marshall too, an excellent combination of knowledge and p*ss taker.

I'm surprised the Aussie commentary teams haven't been mentioned yet. The one-eyedness is shameless. Good comedy value, but that's about it.

@ BokAWhinger - why do you always bring everything back to race and conspiracy theories? I find your comments about racism to be inflammatory, mostly unfounded, out of context, and quite frankly ironically racist

Great Loose Pass PR!

The commentary of where the TV companies want to take rugby is very interesting. I like being reminded about the passion for rugby as a whole, that it's more that just a tribal notion of 'my team', it's more about a truly great sport.

Rugby only needs slight modifications every now and then, but big TV companies could very easily push it into a really crappy place as they search for revenue. Over exposure could debase the sport, as it has with football. It's important to highlight these issues so that the fans are aware of them and can possible resist purely commercial changes which could actually damage the sport. Would appreciate further commentary about this.

Agree on Greenwood and Vickery being the cream of the bunch. Barnes is hard done by and is quite enlightened at times. touched by Shakespeare from his English at Oxford. If you asked some of those other commentators about "Loves Labours Lost" they'd think you were talking about Gordon Browns biography.

@Fozza

In thorough agreement with you re Brian Moore. As an Irishman (albeit living amongst the heathen English for longer than I care to remember) I despised Moore throughout his entire playing career. As a pundit, easily best on these islands! Actually has a knowledge of the laws rather than just guessing like most ex-pros!

Butler on the other hand is an embarassment! (Likes to show he can pronounce French names though!)

Davies has that curiously Welsh trait (which you will witness on these pages) of always knowing better than the ref, which has started to wind me up in recent years!

Greenwood is an excellent & articulate analyst and interviewer!

@ fozza - I also enjoyed Phil Vickery's commentating during the RWC. It was as funny as it was accurate. As sarcastic as it was scathing. Good job, I thought.

On a similar (not really) note, I've always wondered about all these incredible, but slightly maverick, tv cops there seem to be. I'd really like to see them all attending a big Police Event (Annual Awards for most dubious collar, for example) and a murder takes place. Each of them is a prime suspect and they all try to solve it in their own peculiar way.

And no-one could dare suggest that that's not rugby-related. Can they?

Anyone else remember back in 2005 when wales won the grand slam, captain Michael Owen was lifting the trophy when BBC presenter Jill Douglas then tried to interview him! Absolutely bizarre! TV presenting at its worse.

I'm always a bit baffled by the hatred shown towards Brian Moore. I am English but I've never thought he was biased in anyway. If anything, I've believed he's gone in the other direction doing everything he can to ensure he's not seen as bias. He tends to be intelligent with his comments, even when they're "controversial". He took the time to go on a referee course, which is more than the usual pundit and if he's made a snap judgement and it turns out on replay he was wrong, he will own up to it.

I also have a lot of time for Eddie Butler, despite his obvious Bias. Even the late, great Bill Mclaren could be heard getting a touch excited when Scotland threatened the try line.

Jonathan Davies, however, winds me up something Chronic... Shouting "He's in" when a Welsh player makes a break or telling them when they should pass it, being completely blinkered to anything the Welsh do wrong and exclaiming "ooff" whenever there's a big hit (I guarantee if you're reading this, you will be listening for it next time he graces our airwaves). I find him ridiculously annoying, however, I'm more than willing to accept that his voice is mana from heaven to others... that's the joy of commentators, we all have our favourites!

re the TV thing - anyone remember Nigel Melville leaving the team tactics folder in the back of a Limerick taxi.

I'm pretty sure that any pundit worthy of the name will know exactly what the general game plan will be before the game starts its the fine detail that will be missing and they seem to pick it up fairly quickly after the kick-off, certainly the ESPN team (that's the guys that have actually played the game at that level) seem to have their finger on the pulse.

The O'Gara decision is inexplicable given an almost identical act by Flannery on Palisson a few seasons ago which earned him 6 weeks. I guess that the reduction was because you can't kick a forward as high as a back.

@eireoldboy - It was nailed on red.

Re the nationalistic bias - this was ERC jurisdiction so there would have been no Irish bias. The whole point of the citing panel is that they can consider all aspects of an incident. The trouble is, they seem to look for more differences than similarities in incidents and we end up with completely different outcomes for similar offences.

@BokAvenger - See your back on the paranoia pills again...

@APV 1 I can remember when Barnes was a building society manager for the Bristol & West... imagine how hard it was to get a mortgage off of him. Barnes is a true legend in his own mind.

I do agree all this intrusion is getting a bit much including the ESPN totty on the mike.

@ BokAvenger - I've not seen the Mik Bassett thing you've referred to, so I have no idea what you're on about. Have a little re-read of heathy's comment and have a grown up explain it to you. Then you might start to realise that your nonsense trolling and conspiricy theories are wearing a little thin.

Nationalistic bias? Absolutely. I'm very proud to be English.

Prejudice? Only towards trolls like you.

Have to agree that the tv intrusion is getting daft now,no coach is going to let his tatics / thinking for any match, get outside the team.Stupid tv even thinking it will happen. As tyo the ROG ban ,what a total disgrace, and joke. The only way round these stupid commitee decisions ,is the bans carry a minium number of weeks ,which cant be cut for any reason.A committe meets only to see if the minium should be extended, for malicous play ,intent ect,but never to lessen a automatic ban for any reason.

Also nice touch from PR concerning E.Bechu,a great coach who will be sorly missed in France and elsewhere.

You're right! i think he got 8 to 10 caps, made one good break against Scotland for that underwood try and has moaned his way through life ever since!

The ex players in general are like ex smokers - very quick to slate players forgetting they were once imperfect too

Concerning O'Gara's punishment....what would he have gotten if either the Ref or AR had seen the infringement? Just a penalty, penalty and a yellow card or a straight red? The penalty and yellow would have been the most likely result. So, why should the sanction in the citing hearing be that much different than the "on the field" punishment? One week was the equivilent of the punishment fitting the crime.
