Vincent Clerc Toulouse scoring a try against Ospreys Heineken Cup

Toulouse: Shining light in a rather dull Heineken Cup weekend

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with the Heineken Cup, Wales and Quade Cooper...

What a weekend of Heineken Cup...

The most underwhelming weekend the tournament has had for some time. Test match intensity it may have been at times, but the evidence is very clear: either the officials need to change their methodology, or the mindset needs to change... or.... something needs to change.

We had a terrific Saturday all lined up. A feast. Toulouse, as so often, provided. Nobody else did. Toulon, laden with proven global stars in nearly every position, simply kicked into Sale's half and relied on the pressure to pay off, eventually nicking a fortunate try.

Munster and Saracens spent 80 minutes in a desperate effort to either slow each other's ball down or run extremely hard at each other with little thought for guile or skill. Munster prevailed in a battle of kickers

Cardiff and Montpellier's clash was riddled with penalties; the tries only really came once Lloyd Williams had been dispatched. Neither Leinster nor Clermont looked remotely capable of striking more than once against each other. Eventually, neither side managed even one strike; the game was decided by a drop goal.

The officiating is not top drawer. Far, far too much leeway is allowed at breakdown time, too many players are allowed to lie all over balls, too little attention is afforded to the offside line outside the rucks. A stricter stance at ruck time would enable players to play the ball and scrum-halves to distribute properly rather than the undistinguished digging through bodily parts that goes on these days.

But the players and coaches are not encouraging anything. I can't remember one time I saw a fly-half taking a ball on the run this weekend. Nor can I remember - again, Toulouse were the glorious exceptions - much in the way of creative running angles, forwards and backs intermingling skills and muscle, slick hands or variety of tactic.

Once again we were treated to a thumping row of hoisted 50-50 high balls and grinding territorial kicks to corners. Then from the line-outs, crash went the forwards, bash went the centres, boomp went the ball off boot.

When the SH teams arrived in November, we all thought Australia and South Africa looked vulnerable. Both have been in ruts of different kinds, both have under-performing flagship domestic teams. Yet once again, both left British shores unbeaten while only France managed to produce the real performance of pace, power and precision to account for Australia.

If the North was left wondering why it had such a poor November - England's freak win over the ABs notwithstanding - it should look hard at the weekend just past. Look through the videos, look at the number of overlaps wasted, promising positions kicked away, poor decisions in contact made, negative efforts made by defences at breakdowns, indulgence of officials to cynical defensive tactics.

It's grim up north right now. It's time for a change.

Just how much of a hole is Wales in right now?

A year ago, all was rosy. The WRU was dripping with liquidity, the players were celebrating after a stellar World Cup and working towards a Grand Slam...

But yet the players just drip away. Dan Lydiate is the latest to head to France, Dan Biggar is set to follow, hot in the footsteps of such illuminaries as Gethin Jenkins, Mike Phillips, Jamie Roberts, James Hook and several others. The exodus seems not set to end there just yet.

Then there's the injury list. Roberts is the latest on it (how much has he really been off it recently), joining almost an XV's worth of internationals on the sidelines.

You've also got an accounting firm releasing a report on regional rugby's viability so troublesome to the WRU that they've set up a new body to help the franchises defend their territory.

Then you've got a sudden fall from grace to ninth in the world, a fall that means among other things you will be facing two nemeses and a bête noir in the next World Cup...

Where did it all go wrong? Was it letting Warren Gatland indulge his Lions dream? Bad player management? Bad financial management? Bad luck? Is, as Wales CEO Roger Lewis has intimated, the economic crisis gripping Wales so hard that progress is just not possible right now?

The World Cup is still two years away. But Wales have a monumental rebuilding task to get on with, starting in February with the Six Nations.

Finally, it did not pass unnoticed this week - despite the lack of fanfare and bunting that might normally surround such a signing - that Quade Cooper seems to have been forgiven down south.

It's been a bizarre process. There's been some intolerable critique from Cooper over the Australia camp and its atmosphere, a declaration of intent from both he and his agent that boxing might be a way forward and a frank admission from Cooper that his career was 'on hold'.

Still only 24 and with a nasty knee injury behind him on top of all this kerfuffle, Cooper now appears to have a real chance to show his talents once more.

It's been an up and down journey. The ill-discipline that culminated in the bizarre burglary incident, backed up by a flawless season that culminated in the Reds' Super Rugby triumph, backed up by an indifferent season riddled with injury that culminated in poor form and public spats with the administration...

It seems a down has just finished. Dare we look forward to another 'up' year from one of the game's most idiosyncratic talents?

I thought the Clermont-Leinster game was a good mix of pace and power but have to agree the handling and missed chances by both sides were disappointing. The breakdown is a mess full stop, attacking teams are allowed to stand offside, even smack bang in front of the ruck, ball is sealed off most of the time, defense has little chance to compete and instead spread out to fill the field and ensure, yes, another ruck.

Connacht-Biarritz was really entertaining too, but more to watch Biarritz imploding and the subsequent fall out than anything else. I see that Leinster have done another poaching job - have fun swapping stories on the bench with Jamie, Fionn and Sean, Mike.

How can you take the authors comments seriously when he thinks that the World Cup is 2 years away! It's easy to hand pick certain games that back up your point, you could also have picked several games that completely disprove his point. There are plenty of teams in the NH that play an exciting brand of rugby such as Leinster, Ulster, Toulouse, Gloucester, and Quins who have been mesmeric at times this year. I notice everyone seems to have forgotten that the Stormers almost won Super Rugby this year with the most conservative/negative tactics that you're ever likely to see. I know that SA went unbeaten on their NH tour, but the style of play wasn't exactly a joy to behold. Where as both NZ and Oz were well beaten in one of their games. Oz, in fact, were only a nats hair away from losing all 4 of their games. If they had have lost to England, Italy, and Wales would we still have been hearing the same arguments about the north south divide. I would hope that most people are able to look at a performance not just a result, and see that a win by the odd point or 2 would suggest that there is little if anything between the teams. I mean, 5/6 months ago we could have pointed to Scotlands unbeaten SH tour and suggested that they were the team to model yourself on!!

Since the change of Laws interpretation in 2010, the breakdown became a dogs' breakfast, just to stop Boks' dominance.

Even England vs New Zealand was messy, with no player on his feet, never.

It seems that people notice that only when their teams get hurt by cheaters.

hehehe @Stellenbosched2, I think froggy73 is alluding to the fact that, yes, Aus beat SA, but they only met because Ire beat Aus in the pool. Then again, I may well be wrong. Trying to decipher what we enigmatic French mean when we speak English is never easy (and bear in mind, I'm saying this with a shrug of the shoulders and protruding lower lip, but that doesn't come across so well on the internet!!).

well, the only good news then is Cooper has re-signed, good for the REDS but not so sure Robbie Deans is smiling about it despite his job - probably - being safe 'til RWC 15. Didn't see the HC games (damn Sentana having the coverage) but this piece is a rapid deviation from what I normally read about HC weekends, a one-off or could McAnderson be on to something? (for once?)

@OzinLondon

Well England lost the game against Australia rather than Australia winning it. They dropped the ball on the line a few times, didn't kick kickable penalties, etc... It was there for the taking and we didn't have the right decision making on the day to win.

@celticspirit

Was the French result a freak result then?

Looking at the Heineken Cup, I never actually get to watch the games which I am not that disappointed about.

Do the NH teams and nations not get the idea that the SH nations especially NZ and Australia play much more attractive, free flowing rugby and shockingly theyre 1,2 and 3 in the world.

The Reds won in 2011 with (I hate to say it, being from Wellington) a fantastic style of rugby to watch with Will Genia and Quade Cooper.

The Chiefs were brilliant this year with Aaron Cruden and Sonny Bill Willliams.

The point being those two teams in their winning seasons were the most enjoyable teams to watch.

England didn't beat the All Blacks by kicking goals all day. They also scored 3 tries.

And as for the weather, check out the ITM Cup, that has plenty of rain. Counties Manukau and Canterbury had an average of 4 tries per game and next minute they win the championship and premiership respectively.

Someone in Europe, have a go. See how it works out.

Biased comment almost as bad as listening to Sky commentary, Irish bias and English bias, again I ask when will sky employ someone to put the French perspective, even the BBC managed to get Serge to provide an opinion on the games they teled.

there's some pretty loose analysis in tis article...france's performance against australia wasnt a paragon of precision pace and power for a start (if only it had been) even if that suits your story. and the summary of this w/e's heineken cup games is frankly naive.

of course if the objective is simply to be provocative then fair enough.

some sensible posts have already pointed out that conditions play a big part..and its a very selective analysis, ignoring games which disprove the point being made.

Very good article, anyone who says otherwise has either not been watching or has no clue. Mind you, it is certainly exaggerated to deduce a general malady of NH Rugby from that. Some of the Rugby has been great, especially in the French league. Ulster are all action and Quins and Leicester look solid. So basically what we found out is that Leinster are having a relatively bad year (for their standards), Clermont had a bad day, Munster and Sarries dont play exciting Rugby (well, what is new) and Toulouse still do. All in all just a disappointing weekend, nothing more nothing less. Especially since the weather / climate does come into play as APV rightly points out.

The officiating has been inconsistent and it is most important to sort out the break down, especially since I feel that the laws allow some pretty clear measures against offsides at the ruck and in the ruck and are generally pretty clear nowadays about releasing.

Just for the record referring to these blind English fans: Yes, England's victory was a freak result. A great performance, well-deserved - and a freak result. Once they follow it up down South, the you can start bragging.

NHsaints

England shoulda woulda coulda... but didn't.

I agree with you that the article is rubbish but you don't sound any better with yet more claims of how great England is.... but.....

The fact is that England won 1 out of 3 games against 4N opposition, at home, at the start of their season, against tired and (for the games they lost) injury-plagued opposition. They played very well against the ABs but can anyone say with confidence that they could perform that way every week?

If you don't want uninformed SH types making silly comments... stop it with the coulda, woulda shoulda chat... its just as bad.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why England "should have" beaten Australia.

I think the point is that we have seen what France do on and off, what Ireland can do a couple of times a year and what England did 2 weeks ago (i.e. produce the best rugby I have seen in years). So the question is this: Why can't we have a bit of that every weekend?

Posted 17:45 10th December 2012

TVaddict says...

I totally agree with the comments about the refereeing of the breakdown. Completely unacceptable for refs to just give up and let teams do whatever they want. The ref for Munster vs Saracens did his best, but should have been handing out yellow cards for both sides for the number of penalties alone. Almost every single breakdown both teams were doing something illegal and that's what stopped an entertaining game in that case, not the weather. Needs sorting because it's not going to attract more people to watch rugby and it could even drive fans away if we see too many of those games.

Hi Froggy 73,

I have thought about it for a while and Australia is STILL in the SH. Anyway, please can't we all move beyond this NH vs SH nonsense? I would have to agree with APV1 that weather conditions play a big role in the type of rugby played. Now we sit back and wait for all our Kiwi friends to point out that they play expansive rugby in 'English' conditions....

This website needs to change its name to Souther Hemisphere Planet Rugby !!! Get a grip Anderson, your supposed to give a balanced view of both NH & SH Rugby. If your aim is to get both NH & SH followers niggling each other it won't work, there are to many well informed people on this website. You however are the exception, get yourself up to Salford on a sh**ty December night and then see how much flowing rugby you'll get. Englands freak win over New Zealand !!! Unexpected I'll grant you but your comment does smack of "toys out of your pram" syndrome.
