@Sasquatch you LEGEND. So, what do the Kiwis have to say now from up there on the moral high ground? Coconut Cohorts eh? Oh, but yes...in life, as in rugby, there is one set of rules for New Zealand and another for the rest of us.

@ BokAvenger - stop being so antagonistic and have a little mayo with that chip on your shoulder. I've never suggested that the UK is perfect - far from it. I'll quote myself: "...we also have our fair-share of idiots - be they racists or otherwise." So stop being such a prat and accept that fact that we don't all have to agree with each other all the time.

You'll also have to excuse me whilst I accept the truth, rather than your version of the casue of the riots, "...the London riots last year, which were sparked by a case of racism from the cops," Just because they weren't white, doesn't mean racism was involved. However, I'll let you be for now, as I suspect another member of your household might want the family brain cell back for the weekend.

It's good to know that we do share some common ground, however. Richie's work at the breakdown (not exclusively at the bottom of a ruck) is incredible! His work would make even David Copperfield jealous. Eh, Ramage & ruckingkiwi..!? ;-)

@ justice_4_all - I didn't realise the Poms and Paddies were touring Twickenham. I heard we were off to SA and the Irish were off to some back-water called New Zealand. They couldn't even go to the original Zealand and had to find a New one!

And I take it from your IRB Rankings comment that you're also expecting England to be in 2nd, with Wales 3rd, Aus 4th and the Saffas somewhere between Madagascar and Andorra, once the tours have finished..?

;-)

I'd like to name-drop just a little too. I once (when I was about 9) served afternoon tea to the late (great!) Bob Holness - the original James Bond. I have many other claims too, some which would easily top-trump ruckingkiwi's efforts thus far as well. But as legends go, Bob Holness literally took a biscuit (from me).

@Sasquatch: I hear you boet..have heard quite a few stories about ol Hugh "Make it a Double" Bladen. But he's like part of the furniture when I watch rugby. A Bok test match just wouldn't be the same without Blades shouting "Unbelievable" into the microphone.

Hey all you Kiwi's, please explain why if the word "coconut" is so offensive you can buy a t-shirt from arcrugby that says "Coconut cohort" on it?

@Bok Avenger, Justice:

While I was studying I was fortunate enough to work for a company that did bar services in all the stadiums in SA. Hugh Bladen was always in the bar before games. He would go from one bar to another but just have one at each bar and tell people that he was just having a quick one before the game. He would get through a fair bit. One day at Loftus one of our staff claimed to have seen him lift a bottle of whisky. He would usually hang around after the game and get smashed and believe me it wasn't pretty; I think of Bells every time I hear his voice.

@Sasquatch..now I understand, that derogatory comments is a 'norm' in SA???WTF....

@BAV...ignorant? remove the tags...

@J4A...not a kiwi nor an adopted kiwi but good try....

@Sasquatch - you are clearly a clown. Phil Kearns is an absolute LEGEND in the commentary box and I think Marto and Rod Kafer are pretty cool too. Okay they're a bit one eyed but they've got some classic chirps and I just love them. And that from a Saffa. But criticizing Blades is just complete sacrilege. You are now public enemy number 2 in SA behind Bryce Lawrence.

@Ramage:

I enjoy Mexted, cannot stand Kearns. All in all I enjoy the commentators regardless of where they're from. I have to say that the worst has to be SA's Hugh Bladen.

@APV1: Yes mate. I grew up in the shadow of apartheid and you grew up in Merry England where children of all races frolick in harmony alongside roads paved with gold and drink from rivers of chocolate. I guess the London riots last year, which were sparked by a case of racism from the cops, were merely an optical illusion...much like Richie McCaw's work at the bottom of a ruck.

@ Ramage - thank you again for your reasoned wisdom.

And for those who want to be extra careful and join me in my crusade of Political Correctness, it does indeed appear that our language is being restricted. I was totally unaware of many of these, even those listed as used in the UK:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs#cite_note-47

It's interesting to note that it's also a term in the UK, US, Canada, used in a similar manner to SA, not that i was aware of it...

(P.S. Gotta love the word, "ethnophaulisms" haven't you?)

@ruckingkiwi: Sorry mate, I forgot..in the Land of the Rigged World Cup "Yarpies" [sic] are the bogeymen and Kiwis are angels sent from heaven to enlighten the world about morals, fair play and unbiased refereeing.

Ramage says...

I think many people are missing the point of what APV1 has been trying to say I just take the point which I wish to commend him on and quote, "do I find racism abhorrent? Yes." So on that point he is to be commended. What the argument has descended to is a yes it is no it isn't. There are obviously differences in interpretations as to what is racist and what isn't. In NZ the term is an insult just as a Maori calling me a honkey. Just thought Id bring in another one for educational purposes of course. I've referred to other names that are unacceptable and racist in their meaning. Skinstad made a mistake and in the heat of the moment said something that is highly offensive and considered racist in the country the player comes from. We have been told it is not considered to be racist in the country the commentator comes from which just goes to show how careful the commentators have to be when their broadcasts are beamed into other countries. The onus is on the broadcaster to be professional and whether Skinstad knew about this term, which in mho he did, it still behoves that commentator to be professional. I'm sure that is all that needs to be asked. I would hope that should a NZ commentator make such a comment I would not don my armour mount my trusty steed and come riding to his defence just because he is a kiwi. After all we did, unfortunately, give the world Murray Mexted as a commentator and it makes me hang my head in shame. It only goes to show past players do not always make good commentators. Mexted, Moore, Barnes, Kearns, Martin and now Skinstad. Althought to be fair I dont really rank him as bad as the others in that line up. What a mighty response Richard Anderson, well done you certainly have got the keyboards ringing.

APV1 says...

@ BokAvenger - thanks for the explanation. I suppose in a country where it hasn't been socially acceptable to tolerate racism for many years, there's a different outlook from one which is still in the shadow of apartheid. That's not a critisism, depite your attempts to associate me with Ripzy007, just a genuine acceptance of the differences between our two great nations. I was also unaware that, "...playing cricket and rugby instead of soccer, starts eating sushi and listening to the Parlotones" were exclusively suburban white past-times in SA. I'll have to bear that in mind.

I'll also happily take "bland" and "monochrome" if the alternatives are intolerance and racism. I don't think England is either, but if that's what you're offering, oh Great Oracle and Wonder, I guess I'll accept them gratefully.

I'm Engish, with Dutch and Irish parents (and a little Scotish and Spanish, if you go back far enough), so we don't have the best history of "race relations". In fact, Saffas, Kiwis and Aussies (indigenous, that is), amongst many others have suffered at our hands in the annals of history. And, despite now generally being quite a tolerant lot, we also have our fair-share of idiots - be they racists or otherwise.

@ ruckingkiwi - I agree. I personally feel that BS knew the term, knew what it meant and used it in the heat of the moment. As such, I think there should be action taken. But that's my opinion.

@ FoxandHound - why? Because some of us get a little hot under the collar when our deeply held beliefs and principals are afronted. Am I right? Possibly. Are those who hold different opinions right? Possibly. Are we all passionate about our beliefs? It appears so. In answer to your question, "...why the heck are we all going on like this." - because we can and we want to. Debate and opinions should be encouraged.

Storm says...

@Ramage - appreciate your honest response.

I grew up on the streets and playgrounds of Otara in the 60's and 70's. Nothing but great memories with an absence of any racism.

Labels can define who you are if that is what you believe.

FoxandHound says...

O cry me a river.. So the man said that Masaga preformed a coconut tackle (note he did not call him a coconut).So his not a very good commentator but then again he isnt a commentator his a ex-rugby player ( note he wasnt very good at that ether but thats my opinion). Does this make him a racist I dont know nether does any of you because no one really knows what goes on in some ones mind or heart. What I dont get is why this issue has to be made into such a big circus that we have four pages of comments on it. Its between the insulter and the insulted isnt it so give them a pair of boxing gloves each and let them beat each other to a pulp till the truth gets out or if they have found a more civilized way between the two of them then why the heck are we all going on like this.

Posted 08:26 26th April 2012

BokAvenger says...

@Ripzy007 - you are as ignorant as your mate APV1. But then again I should probably sympathise with you lot who come from bland places like the UK and Australia where life is so spectacularly monochrome that you have trouble dealing with anything more socially complex than an episode of Neighbours. Quick...run and report this to the PC police...you wouldn't want anyone out there actually thinking for themselves now would you?

Posted 07:15 26th April 2012

Sasquatch says...

@Ripzy007 : that wasn't my explanation mate, read my post again. We actually had a toung-in-cheek sitcom called "The Coconuts" a few years ago in SA. It was about a black family living it up like a white family in the new South Africa. I know that it's difficult for a lot of foreigners to understand the racial relationships in SA e.g. in SA mixed race folk are referred to as coloured, I know that is considered derogitory in many countries but it is quite the norm over here, coloureds refer to themselves as coloureds.

@ramage: I agree with Justice, very insightfull.

Posted 00:10 26th April 2012

Ripzy007 says...

@sasquatch....even your explanation is derogatory 'referring to a black person who acts like a white person'. most bok or bs supporter are defensive with this issue merely becoz you are trying to stamp out the act from your conscious....
