Offer: BT Sport

The four Welsh regions have reportedly each been offered £4 million by BT Sport and the PRL to join an Anglo-Welsh league next season.

The regions' current participation agreement with the Welsh Rugby Union expires on December 31st. It appears the four regions will refuse to sign a continuation of this agreement and chase the possibility of playing in an Anglo-Welsh league.

According to the Telegraph, the figure offered by BT Sport and Premier Rugby Limited is roughly the same as the amount earned by the four regions - Cardiff Blues, Newport Gwent Dragons, the Ospreys and the Scarlets - from their current participation in the Pro12, Heineken Cup and LV=Cup.

That sum also includes the money received for releasing players for internationals.

Continuing however in their agreement with the WRU - which is worth £1.2 million to each team - is seen by the regions as "financial suicide" according to the Telegraph report, which also points out that approval from the RFU is required for the Anglo-Welsh league to go ahead.

The creation of three new regions by the WRU should the current four break away, and the introduction of central contracts, are to be discussed at an WRU meeting on January 2nd.
