Glasgow Warriors flanker Tyrone Holmes hopes his recent performance against the Ospreys will win him a start in the Heineken Cup.

The high-flying Scottish side travel to Cardiff this weekend to face the Blues after picking up one win out of two from their opening European matches this season.

Gregor Townsend's side saw off Exeter Chiefs at home and produced a late fightback against Toulon that in the end wasn't enough in the European champions' backyard.

Now ready for the trip to Wales, Holmes put in a strong performance in the recent Pro12 win over the Ospreys and is hoping for similar success this weekend, should he get the nod.

"It was great to get the start down at Ospreys and even better to play my part in a vital win for us. So hopefully I have done enough to stay in for the Heineken Cup tie at Cardiff," Holmes told the Glasgow Evening Times.

"I had my best match in a Glasgow shirt in the last Heineken Cup tie.

"The Heineken Cup is one of the reasons I came to Glasgow and this game on Friday night is just massive for our hopes of going on and qualifying for the knockout stages.

"So it is exactly the type of game you want to play in."

Holmes, a new recruit over the off-season after stints with the Stormers and Western Province, is also enjoying his personal tussle with Chris Fusaro for the number seven jersey - and ready to face Wales' returning international stars including the likes of Sam Warburton and Leigh Halfpenny.

"The openside slot at seven is the one I prefer. The competition for that jersey between myself and Chris Fusaro will drive us both on," added Holmes.

"The jersey has swapped between and we both know that if we have a bad game then we will be dropped. But although I was satisfied with my performance at the Ospreys I know I have room for improvement.

"With Cardiff getting their British Lions back from Wales' duty, and the fact they beat Toulon at the Arms Park in their last Heineken Cup tie, we know we are going to have to lift things again.

"But that is the way it should be in European rugby's top knockout tournament."
