Confidence is contagious - Meyer

02nd October 2012 06:46

Heyneke Meyer SA coach RC 2012

Happier each week: Heyneke Meyer

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says his team's improved performance against Australia was down to the players better understanding the game plan and what he wanted from them.

"When I went through the video today there was almost silence for the whole video because there was not much that I could add," Meyer said on Monday.

"They are starting to understand the game plan, what we want from them and how we want them to play."

Meyer, however, knows full well that New Zealand will post a different challenge when the two sides square up in the final Rugby Championship match at Soccer City on Saturday.

While Meyer was wary of the All Blacks he said he was encouraged by the way the team started to execute the game plan.

"What we did better was the execution of the game plan, and we can even execute much better," Meyer said.

"They got a huge amount of confidence after the first New Zealand game, and confidence is contagious as a lack of confidence.

"I've always said it is a process, and if we win Saturday I think we've come a long way and we've won all our home games and look forward to the end-of-year tour."

The Bok mentor said it was important for the side to beat the New Zealanders this weekend and on a regular basis with an eye on the 2015 World Cup in England.

"Every single test match we want to play well and improve and prove that we can beat them," he said.

"It is also psychological, we have to beat them to be able to believe that and beat them consistently especially going forward to the World Cup."

@ safehands how long did it take NZ to win the world cup again and who conjured up Suzie " the team poisoner" and the 2007 WC being fixed.

Mate the records show until you started importing players to bolster your side, you were behind us in the tally, at least the Boks are South African with the exception of beast. That was the whole reason you and Australia wanted us banned from international rugby coz we thrashed u for 60 years. Read up on your own rugby history before you start pointing fingers and making an arse out of yourself with your limited knowledge on the subject.

I say, ban the haka do that crap in your own country, nobody else is interested in it. Oh yes you would whinge about that to.

New Zealands World Cup motto: tried for 24 years... couldn't for 24....match fixed for 2011. You damn right South Africa "could've "would've" in 2011 if it wasn't for your ref

I love the way you saffas always believe that if your 'best' team is chosen (the way the fans see the 'best' team that is), then the All Blacks would have no chance of winning.....hahahaha.....what a set of over inflated dillusional muppets...where have you been for the last 16 years of the 3N and now RC?? 3 titles alongside the mighty Wallabies and you still consider yourselves the team that loses matches themselves and not that there is actually better teams out there!!

For all your posturing and excuses the fact is you lot are simply not smart enough to consistently be the best because you all believe the same tripe!!! What saffas are consistently brilliant at is whinging and blaming everybody else for their teams mediocre efforts....and for coming up with the best ever conspiracy theories hahaha!!

New motto for saffas should be.....Could've, would've...DIDN'T!!!

@ georgesmith The only position for Lambie, is to try out for scrum-half I reckon he would be good if not brilliant, to many fly-halves available and Jantjies will be slotted there first after Steyn, Goosen so I reckon no chance there. We don't have any stand out scrum-halves I can think of. Both Pienaar and Hougaard have proved mediocre. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway.

Many comments about the gameplan and I agree we're all a bit in the dark there. However I like Meyer's intent to beat the ABs regularly. Damn right. PdV wasn't bothered about doing that except at the RWC. Meyer is putting his money where his mouth is and I applaud that. Look how flaky the ABs were in the RWC final. Imagine if they had been facing a Bok team that had regularly beaten them. Boks vs ABs should always be a contest, good for Meyer.

So HM is saying M.Styen wasnt following his gameplan ,or was incapable of implementing it. Why then did he persist so long with him espically as he was out of form ??What utter BS from HM again,im begining to wonder if HM ever tells the truth or even knows it to be honest. Its good the bokke are confident now,but last weeks win ,was against a very depleted wallaby team in disarray.Going to be alot different this weekend against the ABs.,who seem to have found 3rd and 4th gears, and who have refound their passing.offloading game to boot.Just hope that any loss doesnt make HM start backtracking into his old gameplan and mentality. As its fairly obvious the way forward is to build on last weeks performace and gameplan.@Diabok you maybe right he is funnier than PDvyyyyy lol.

Hope Boks do not fall into their old trap of overconfidence before a test. That attitude has cost them many times before. I do agree that pressure is one of the most effective weapons against the AB's. The only time they struggle is when you are in their face and they do not have room to set up. If you kick back to them and allow them to get going you are in trouble. Best defense is offense oh and no mistakes

Le Roux, Taute, Goosen, Serfontein, Lambie, Joordaan, Hougaard, Pietersen, Pollard, Janties, Steyn, JdJ, Basson, Pretorius. Some of them will be unlucky not to make the Boks

There are a lot of areas in which the Boks must improve.

The line-out was ok, but the scrum was average.

More composure is needed in multi-phase attack.

Kicking accuracy appalling.

Kirchener nearly butchered the first try, not convinced by Lambie at fullback, Stey would have been ideal for that.

How many young talented back we have? And Serfontain and Pollard are out of the mix.

LOL, Heyneke, is a weak Coach and takes no responsibility for his actions. He had no Game Paln and what was there consited of Morne kicking and him not wanting to be proved wrong. His comment about Players not understanding his Game plan is really funny, does he mean the one player as in Morne not understanding and now he is gone they understand. How did he get the job, own coach throwing his players under the bus and has no accountability. He has almost destroyed SA rugby in a couple months and he makes comments like this.

H.Meyer is learning fast. That's positive sign. He has got F. Louw and J. Goosen in so tis all good. Now he needs to make space for P.Lambie ASAP. A good coach has to change things if results are not there. Eventually he will get there. Sadly. H. Meyer could have won it for South Africa if only he had picked right players from the start. Instead he went for experience and veteran players. Coaches need to be bold and also need to perform unlike failed coaches R. Deans, P.Lam and M. Foley. Also players like N.Sharpe and D. Dennis. S. Kepu too.

Was the plan to make Morne invisible and the Convicts fall to pieces?

If so, then it worked.

F-off, Meyer talking like it was all in your master plan pfffft.... I you hadn't of hand your hand forced you'd still be flogging the same 10 man dead horse. Makes me laugh when a coach is forced into making changes and all he can say is we won because the players understood "MY plan" better. What an egg
