Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been suspended for two weeks for a forearm smash to the face of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in Saturday's Rugby Championship match in Dunedin.
Greyling will miss the Springboks' next match, against Australia in Pretoria on September 29.
He admitted hitting McCaw in the 64th minute of Saturday's clash, which was won by the All Blacks 21-11, when he appeared before SANZAR judicial officer Paul Tully on Sunday.
"Greyling, whilst in the process of cleaning out at a ruck, recklessly used his forearm such that he made contact in a dangerous way with the head of New Zealand player Richie McCaw," Tully said.
"Although there was no injury complained of, the action had potential to cause serious injury."
Lock Eben Etzebeth, who was banned for two weeks for a headbutt in their previous Test against Australia, will be back for the return match.
Springbok's coach Heyneke Meyer apologised to McCaw after the match and said Greyling's behaviour had cost them the game.
"We're a team that prides ourselves on discipline and we can't afford these things in games," Meyer said.
Skipper Jean de Villiers also said Greyling would face internal action.
"We'll never condone playing dirty," de Villiers said.

Good call Carpelone. Does such a frivolous sentence declare an open season on McCaw?

I hope he plays for the Boks again, somehow I think the ABs discrete way of evening things out is better justice than 2 weeks.

What is it about South Africans and thuggery? Just when you think they have gotten rid of the bad apples, there is a new crop ready to take up the mantle. I really feel for the decent players in the team, because these guys are destroying the whole brand image for South African rugby.

@ Trinats lol sound's like McCaw should have gotten the suspension instead!
I had a saffa mate around to watch the match yesterday, who'd missed this year's SupeRugby. When Greyling came on I said to him, "oh,no this dude you've just brought on tends to give away a lot of penalties" sure enough, even with head in hands even my mate had to laugh in disbelief with what followed.

Mc Caw most infuriate opposition players judging by the number of cheap shots he has endured over the years. Yet its "just one of those things" according to Ritchie. Love him or hate "McCheat" he is as tough as teak and an incredible team man.
Heartening to see SA supporters and coaches condemning Greying. Two weeks this time (light) and plenty next time and there will be a next time for Greyling. He is a serial offender.

LOL
EE got 2 weeks and missed 1 match; DG gets 2 weeks and misses 1 match. both benefit from the off week before NZ & OZ travel to Africa :)
This is ridiculous. RU should take a leaf from football (FIFA) book and apply match bans.(e.g. Luiz Suarez banned for 8 matches for implied racism. )
what would have happened if there was a mid- tournament break of 2 weeks? DG will be available for the match in 3rd week.
LMFAO.

Absolute disgrace that this act of thuggery only received a two week ban.

think this judicial man was being a bit creative "process of cleaning out at a ruck" - it looked like a straightforward and deliberate hit on the player on the ground.
Anyway, apart from this ban I doubt it's done his future any good.
This from an SA site maybe sums it up: ¿Possibly the worst cameo by a Springbok prop in history and as close to a nought as possible.¿ A pathetic display from the Blue Bulls prop which included three penalties and a yellow card in 20 minutes of rugby, 10 of which were spent in the sin bin.

Lifetime ban from playing for the Boks please. Coenie back soon and I'll be interested to see how WP Nel goes in Europe too. Whatever, this guy should be 6th or 7th choice even disregarding this ugly incident. Oh and Kitshoff looks a fine prospect in the next year or so. Greyling won't be missed. Respect to McCaw too for not hyping it.

Justice 4 Greyling !!! McCaw head butt his elbow !!!
Greyling is a thug and should have got more. Everyone that plays against McCaw wants to smack him one for lying on the wrong side for the ruck deliberately. But you can't take the law into your own hands, that's crossing the line.
