Pumas claim historic draw with Boks

Smashed: The Boks got a taste of their own medicine

South Africa needed a charge-down try to snatch a 16-all draw against Argentina at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on Saturday.

The outcome is the Pumas' best result in 15 Tests with the Springboks, but the hosts will nevertheless be bitterly disappointed after leading the match until the 65th minute.

Argentina held a deserved 13-3 lead at half-time as the limitations of South Africa's predictable game plan were exposed. Unable to dominate their opponents physically or at the set piece, the Boks no had alternative solution to get past the resolute Argentine defence.

Intensity is sometimes an overused word in rugby columns but the Pumas were positively breathing fire! It's a rare sight to witness the Springboks outmuscled at the breakdown area but they were coming off second best as the hosts threw numbers into the contact area, especially in the first hour.

Poor decision making and an inexcusable number of missed tackles left Heyneke Meyer's men staring defeat in the face until Frans Steyn saved their blushes with an opportunistic try.

The verdict from Boks fans will be clear: Simply not good enough.

Argentina were first on the scoreboard when Martín Rodríguez landed a penalty with his second attempt at goal.

The Pumas showed a refreshing commitment to keep the ball alive and were rewarded with a try via Route One at the end of an eight-phase charge. Centre Santiago Fernández collected the ball after a strong run form prop Juan Figallo to ghost into a gap and score under the sticks. Rodríguez added the easy extras.

The full-back missed another opportunity to extend the lead but visiting pivot Morné Steyn was also off target with his first penalty attempt, leaving the scores at 10-0 on the half-hour mark.

South Africa's fly-half landed his next shot though to become the Springboks' highest all-time points scorer, but Rodríguez replied in kind just before the interval to maintain the ten-point gap as the teams swapped ends.

Steyn and Rodríguez traded penalties early in the second period but referee Steve Walsh was starting to tire of Argentina's infringements on the deck and the South African fly-half could reduce the deficit to seven points.

Fernández narrowly missed a drop goal as the hosts tried to run down the clock, but the Pumas were getting ahead of themselves. The game was far from over.

The boisterous crowd was finally subdued when Frans Steyn charged down Marcelo Bosch and jogged in for a match-changing try. His namesake's conversion levelled matters and the scorers were not troubled again.

Man of the match: Veteran prop Rodrigo Roncero had a storming game but we can't look past Pumas skipper Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe who was brilliant at the breakdown, outstanding on defence and made life very difficult for the Boks in the line-outs.

Moment of the match: You've never heard a roar from a rugby crowd like the one after Santiago Fernández's try. It was a great moment for Argentine rugby not only because it put the Pumas ten points ahead but because of the way the hosts threw themselves into contact to set it up. 'Commitment' does not even begin to describe it.

Villain of the match: Heyneke Meyer. Not even the Bulls play old-school Bulls rugby anymore. Something needs to change. Fast.

@ Carpelone - good point!

What is it about 10s who can't tackle but are "hugely talented"..?

Steyne.

Cipriani.

Cooper.

Henson (!)

Agree. But, at least, he is a deterrent for attacking the line and not an invitation like Steyn..

I guess that I have to explain in person. You are invited to a braai, with lots of beers (Castle lager, no offence meant). In any case, I did not mean you, I mean some of your fellow countrymen (boys). But this is not connected with a specific nation, the mother of the idiots is always pregnant.

I am interested in knowing how you would make the Boks line-up better.

I must say that I felt that there was a severe lack of spring in the boks' step. They seemed to boot it up and lumber after it. Where was the flair?

The Pumas deserved to win and were the better team. But the scoreboard reflects a very lucky chargedown (by their very nature, they're lucky - just ask Charlie Hodgson!), rather than the skill shown by the teams.

@ Carpelone - you could be right about Butch James, but the penalty count was quite high enough - almost as high as his tackles!! ;-)

Really! Well if you don't know those guys you haven't been reading that much on this site to form such an opinion. Rather like with your very unbalanced claim about the posters from the 2cnd NZ/Ireland game which has nothing to do with this game so why bring it up? Answer = finger pointing. Doesn't quite fit in with your description of yourself above does it?

I would like to explain you SA's rugby culture.

Rugby for us is training for life. We despise cheating. The better the opponents, the better you have to be. This is why we do not have problems to give credit to opponents.

I do not know the guys you mentioned.

@noord_transvaal

"you cant win a game with Bulls rugby if you have a team full of Sharks and Stormers. They don't get it very well."

Agreed. However, with the majority SA's talent pool not playing Bulls rugby provincially, does it make sense to shoe-horn them into that style in the Boks, against the winds of change?

Welcome Los Pumas, a fine effort.

You say "We have no problems to give credit to our opponents, including the Kiwis"

So why do you yourself keep chirping in with all these double edged silly little bitter comments?

When you say "We" does that include BokAv/BVD

Spot on, as usual.

The issues you are raising were left unanswered since Jake White left. For that gameplan (kick and hope), Butch James is more effective than Steyn.

@ 7ton

You mean quite different from the posts we read after NZ - IRE 2nd test in June.

They read more or less "A win is a win, who cares".

We have no problems to give credit to our opponents, including the Kiwis.

What a game, i´m very proud for The Pumas. We play a great rugby, dominate every contact, Roncero and Fernandez Lobbe has their shoulders red after tackle and tackle every one boks. The heart, the compromise they show won´t be easily forget.

I still can´t believe we didn´t win this match, but this is the way to acheive a win in no longer time.

Proud of the Puma´s that in only 2 games had showed they belong to this tournament.

@Wallaroo

No probs, I hear you and agree with you. I do however feel that the Aus rugby bosses will be quicker and more decisive in correcting coaching staff problems. Here in SA we'll be lucky to see a new coach by 2015

I was expecting something like this, Springboks were just disasterous. Poor archaic game plan, poor execution and predictable at every play. I actually wonder why we bother fielding centers because MS doesn't know they exist, lets rather kick away any possesion we manage to get. Pathetic.

Meyer, another muppet. Anyone that missed the Pumas strength at the breakdown in the first game and that the Boks were in dire straights in this area is devoid of any understanding of the importance the role plays in union. Could not believe that a team like South Africa would fall into the same trap 2 weeks in a row.

Seriously though, even though it has only been a short time I am fairly convinced that Meyer "the one eyed Bull" is not the man for the job. After Pdivvy the Boks needed an innovative coach. As almost impossible as it sounds he seems even more one dimensional than Pdivvy.

A lesson I believe that all the other RC nations can take from this is how the Pumas focussed on and perfected the basics, they executed with absolute perfection and were extremely unlucky not to win.

PS before any Saffers start jumping down my throat I'm fully aware of our 22-0 loss and know that we have a bigger mountain to climb.

I planned my entire day in such a way that I can sit down at 9pm and watch the Boks take on Argentina. A historical moment in deed. Yet I found myself rooting for the Pumas from about the 55th minute as I believe they thoroughly deserved a famous victory. I am very disappointed for Argentina and I am furious with the fact that the Boks managed to save face with a charge-down try. It is disgraceful to witness how a highly paid international rugby coach cannot fathom what the rest of us do. THE 2008 BLUE BULLS GAME PLAN IS OUTDATED AND NEEDS TO BE DISCARDED!! I wonder how Heyneke Meyer is going to be better than PDV??

Why is there no Argentinian commentator for this match for Sky? Skinstad is completely biased. He ignored so much South African foul play but managed to pick up very minor infringements from Argentina. He overpraised many South African plays for example often saying they almost broke the line despite not coming close and makes excuses for them when they mess up or play dirty. Skinstad said Hougaard was awarded a penalty for obstruction, even though it was actually for Hougaard blatantly diving to the floor, pulling an Argentinian player down on top of him and pretending to be hit in the face.

Everybody is taking about how bad the Boks played but that was merit to Argentina that studied them, have a better plan and beat them on every phase of the game.

I have to say there are some very good comments from some very fair minded SA fans here.

I am a Kiwi and I think that NZ may well struggle in Argentina as well and I certainly would not write of South Africas chances against the All Blacks just because of this game.

Well done Argentina you are a credit to this competition

Just back from Mendoza with the empanadas, what a game, what an atmosphere & what a disappointment with only a draw after beating the Boks at their own game

I lost my bet but happy that the Pumas will be a force at least at home ..... the All Blacks will be tough away but can't wait for La Plata !!!
