Cheetahs celebrate in Sydney

On a roll: Cheetahs win again

The Cheetahs claimed their third consecutive victory over the Waratahs, their second in Sydney, with a 27-26 win at Allianz Stadium on Friday.

20-year-old wing Raymond Rhule crossed twice as the Cheetahs bagged their second victory on the road this season after last week's success over the Highlanders.

The visitors outscored the Tahs three tries to two with Rhule's second touchdown in the 69th minute proving be to the decisive blow while ex-Waratahs scrum-half Sarel Pretorius also stood out.

The Waratahs led 20-17 at half-time but the men from Free State battled valiantly through a second-half onslaught from the hosts to claim the spoils.

The Cheetahs had asserted their intentions right from the kick-off when Willie le Roux chipped over the Waratahs backline, before an offload to Robert Ebersohn on the wing gave the Cheetahs a try, merely 40-seconds into the match.

Fly-half Johan Goosen and Pretorius continued to torment the Waratahs with creative attack early on in the first-half, starving the home side of any continuous possession, and in the 17th minute, a brilliant left-spread by the Cheetahs culminated in Rhule scoring the Cheetahs' second try, to lead 14-6.

The Cheetahs maintained a 70 percent dominance in possession, for most of the first-half, before momentum started to swing the Waratahs' way.

A long throw in the line-out found Peter Betham, who caught the Cheetahs defence unaware, and the wing charged through for the home side's first try.

Towards the latter part of the first-half, the Tahs started to dominate possession and attack, forcing the Cheetahs to desperately repel the blue onslaught, but after waves of attack, Adam Ashley-Cooper stretched over for a five-pointer, snatching a three-point lead going into the break.

The second-half started more ominously for the Waratahs, as they started to build a lion's share of possession, attacking more freely and testing the Cheetahs defence. With the Cheetahs starved of possession, the visitors were relegated to a more defensive scavenging game, as the Tahs had a 63 percent of the ball, and almost double the amount of metres in possession.

The Cheetahs however remained defiant and took their opportunities to spoil the Waratahs attack, sniffing for any opportunities that might come their way, and a brilliant 50-metre try, courtesy of another Le Roux chip, a Pretorius dance and offload led to Rhule scoring his second try, the Cheetahs' third to take a 27-23 lead, with 10 minutes remaining in the match.

The Waratahs clawed their way back after a Heinrich Brussow offside infringement, with a penalty goal from McKibbin putting them within a point of the visitors.

The Cheetahs had an opportunity to score a try in the final five minutes, but while they failed to capitalise, they managed to hold the Waratahs from scoring, and the game was all over when the ref awarded the Cheetahs a scrum after the siren.

For the Waratahs, their season is in tatters, having to regroup and face a more clinical Blues next weekend in Sydney, with the Cheetahs flying to Perth for their final leg of the Australasian tour.

@Ramage ROLMAO, mate you have every right to smirk and grin. If the Tahs were a military unit they'd all end up dead from self inflicted wounds.

From now on we need to get some value out of the Tahs, so here's one to begin with.

Q. Why is it good to have a Tahs player as a passenger?

A. You can park in the handicap zone.

My heart bleeds for you Wallaroo as you are a Tahs supporter through and through but allow that evil grin to sweep across my face as the Tahs lose another game and the Sydney press go into a frenzy trying to explain how their predictions have gone down the tubes YET AGAIN. lol.

Well done Cheetahs I admire the way you play the game and when everything goes right and your fitness matches what's needed then beware we have a grand team in our midst. Who was it that said that there is nothing exciting that comes out of Bloemfontein?

@murph get yourself some contact lenses. It's not presumption we've seen it year in and year out. Tahs players called up to Wallaby camp and then lifting their game. As a Tahs supporter this is not something we want to see it's what we endure.

The thing you got correct was that those Wallaby spots should be given to more deserving players. I guarantee Folau will be selected ahead of Mogg, makes a mockery of the "selection" process.

@ tha_mai... "... a crowd of under 12,000 in Sydney. What's that all about?"

Look at their results over the last 3 years ;-) Seriously though the numbers not turning up to Allianz have gotta be a worry esp when 30+K rocked up (on a Thursday) for the NRL opener & the upcoming intra-Sydney A-League (football) & AFL matches are each expected to pull 40-50K. Also the A-League will have free-to-air coverage as of next year leaving ours as the only major code with zero FTA - hell even basketball gets a "match of the round" replay on a Sunday arvo.

Never fear though 'cos Bill Pulver has a cunning plan... check it out on greenandgoldrugby.com then read the comments section...

Meantime it's great to see at least 1 sethfreakin team playing proper footy again. I'd like to think it'll rub off on the others but suspect the Bulls will be their usual selves later today & hope the Crusaders will be their usual selves, a win is getting very overdue!

At last!

so good to hear the cheetahs might be on their breakthrough season.

Goosen seesm to have fully recovered and Sarel is back to where he left SA once: on the brink of a bok jersey. right?

Liking the cheetahs a lot. Uys, van der walt, rhule, daniller, ebersohn could all pick up first springbok caps this year. Uys is an absolute wrecking ball. Quality player.

murph says...

"The players will go to Wallaby camp and lift their game"???

You gotta love the presumption of a Tahs supporter that the underperforming and overpaid Tahs will simply be handed a Wallaby cap.

Not saying it's not true, though. Playing for the Waratahs gives you an automatic right to waste about a dozen Wallaby caps which should otherwise be handed to more deserving players on the basis of such boring attributes as form.

This wa sa gutsy performance...Cheetahs looked dead and buried but fought to the end...Rhule looking very potent, and Danilier is head and shoulders best fullback in SA.

Cheetahs forwards also played their guts out...I think Frans Viljoen may be able to fill Juan Smith;s boots in the Bok team too...

Have to say is nice to see the Cheetahs doing well in S15 ,They play good exciting rugby, and atm,its paying off for them.Espicaly when the other SA teams look stodgy in camparision Bulls kick/ chase Borefest,Stormers just defend, and cant attack, while the Sharks look like their trying a middle ground ,and look lost at times..As for the Tahs looks like another season of all show atm, though their game does look like its improving slowly week by week.

@Stellenbosched2...

You Welcome My Friend.., I just feel We are all very quick to highlight when a team plays badly and it can often desend into a bitchin session, which don't get me wrong can be a bit of craic,( I won't tell You what I think of how the Sharks are playing at the moment).

But I think its equally important to give praise when its due, any time I've watched the Cheetahs(even in defeat) they always, simply, make me smile, by IMO playing the game the way should be played.

So we'll leave it at that and won't bring it down a level or 2 by discussing what has passed for rugby in the 6 Nations.

You know, these are little good news that help you keep smiling. Go the Cheetahs.

@nefri - "4 teams in the playoff" what competition are you watching?

Posted 13:37 15th March 2013

Wallaroo says...

@Trader2, yeah mate seems like it. That "T" word is also starting to become unmentionable. Man it's gonna be a long season. At lease your boys put up a fight and looked like they had more to give.

BTW on the previous post, I got you confused with another unmentionable, also has a 2 and starts with the 10th letter of the alphabet. We all cool mate (well you more than me, rainy Melbourne lol).

Trader2 says...

Go the Cheetahs my Bokke team. Heh Wallaroo well at least the Tah's and the Highlanders got a losing bonus point, seems we are both destined to have a long and painful season.

Wallaroo says...

@Pearcewreck, I reckon the reason they went for the 3 was because they thought they'd get another 3 before the end. Honestly didn't take a watchmaker to work out how quickly the Cheetahs were being pinged. I'm a Tahs fan who desperately wants them to win but not gifted wins they must be wins we have fought for, we need a sustainable winning formula.

I'm sure you are happy to be a Brumbies fan.

Mate there is no way as an Aussie fan you want the Tahs to go bust although I'm sure you want to see them improve and make Australia proud, however I understand your sentiments.

Wallaroo

On that performance none of them would get an invite to a Wallaby camp. Although they did show improvement. They just need to hold onto the pill.

Great win for the Cheetahs, so un-South African to run the ball. Hope they are consistent this year and make it to the play offs.

Hi GCP_jones,

I read your post twice, because it's so nice to read positive comments about SA rugby for a change. Thanks a million.

Don't feel so despondent about NH rugby. As a neutral I have a feeling the Lions are going to rampage through Oz this year. The potentially great Wallaby side in the making two years ago just didn't reach the heights so many expected them to.

On the other side I think SL has been just what England needed (i.e. discipline) Wales have got their mojo back, Scotland are starting to believe in themselves again, and Ireland...yes they are rebuilding but even now BOD is worth 6 'normal' players.

As we in Europe get ready for what in all likelihood will be another turgid, disappointing weekend of "Test" rugby in the 6 Nations.

We would do well to remind ourselves why we love this great sport in the 1st place and we should look no further than the Mighty Cheetahs, they should be appluaded by every rugby fan the world over.(I'll understand if Waratahs fans take a rain-check).
