Lions boss Johan Ackermann reserved special praise for fly-half Marnitz Boshoff following his 24-point haul against the Blues.

Boshoff's boot along with tries from Faf de Klerk, Courtnall Skosan and Coenie van Wyk secured a narrow 39-36 win at Ellis Park.

Ackermann had brought Boshoff back into the fly-half jersey in place of Springbok Elton Jantjies and the move paid off handsomely, as Boshoff kicked three conversion, four penalties and two drop goals.

"His confidence is high, his decision-making is good -- when to kick into the corner, when to run and when to go for the drop goal," said Ackermann.

"It is great when a player is that confident. It also gives confidence to the team."

Ackermann noted his team's resolute defence in a first half that didn't see any points until the 33rd minute with de Klerk's try.

"The first-half defence was excellent because for the first 10 minutes we were not once in their half," added Ackermann.

"To keep them out for that long and to show that composure conceding no penalties and no points was good.

"In the second half we started to see our set pieces reap rewards. A big part of our success today was our set-pieces."
