Slow and steady: Kieran Read

New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen doesn't expect Kieran Read to be rushed back by the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

The IRB Player of the Year has struggled with concussion, missing the first two Tests against England before playing 40 minutes in Hamilton on Saturday.

The Crusaders face the Hurricanes in this weekend's Super Rugby derby but Hansen was cautious about pushing Read back into action too soon, saying time was needed for him to fully recover.

"He seems to be OK at this stage but with concussions you've got to give it time," said Hansen.

"It's not for me to say how much game time he will get. As long as he's OK they will play him.

"Obviously he hasn't played a lot and we played him only 40 [minutes] because that's what we felt he was ready to play.

"They might look at it and say he can play 60 and from there all going well he should be ready to play 80 minutes."

Hansen also expected the Crusaders to not bring back Israel Dagg this weekend, after the full-back missed the last two Tests.

"It'll be up to them [Crusaders] how they reintroduce him but I wouldn't think he'll play this week. That will be up to their medical staff."
