Chiefs through to Super Rugby Final

Sonny Bill Williams of the Chiefs celebrates their win against the Crusaders

Into the final: Sonny Bill Williams

The Chiefs booked their place in the Super Rugby Final after edging past the Crusaders 20-17 in a thrilling semi-final clash on Friday.

An excellent advertisement for Super Rugby, this tense match kept you riveted until the very end.

With four minutes of the semi-final remaining, Crusaders pivot Dan Carter had a chance to level the scores with a penalty from 48m out. But his attempt fell agonisingly short and the Chiefs managed to hang on for a deserved win.

Carter's miss summed up the Crusaders night as the visitors' made numerous uncharacteristic mistakes. They weren't as clinical as we'd seen in last week's play-off win over the Bulls, while the Chiefs played to their strengths and took the Crusaders away from theirs.

The refreshed hosts displayed unrelenting urgency and outscored the more fancied Crusaders two tries to one, whilst their defence - put through a rigorous examination in the final minutes - was also rock-solid.

The Chiefs now await the result from Saturday's other semi in Cape Town where the Stormers will be looking to book a home final, while a Sharks win would hand the Chiefs hosting rights in the decider next weekend.

After ending the regular season as the highest-ranked New Zealand side, the Chiefs made home advantage count this time round after losing their previous encounter to the Crusaders a few weeks ago in Hamilton.

Indeed, the signs were promising from the outset for the home team who looked a sharper, more unified, combination than in that Round 17 game.

Slick Chiefs fly-half Aaron Cruden got the scoreboard ticking with an early three-pointer before Carter banked a penalty of his own to level the scores.

The Crusaders then suffered a massive setback after influential lock Luke Romano was forced off the pitch with a shoulder injury in the 14th minute. And there was no doubt the loss of their All Black hurt them badly.

After keeping the ball alive brilliantly through multiple phases, Chiefs prop Sona Taumalolo bagged the opening try courtesy of yet another controversial call from the TMO. Cruden added the extras, and the Chiefs were looking good at 10-3 after 26 minutes played.

Carter pulled the Crusaders back to 10-6 with a 31st-minute penalty goal after Ben Tameifuna was ruled to have collapsed the scrum.

The home side's dominance though continued from the restart, thanks to a break-out and offload by standout centre Sonny Bill Williams with Liam Messam on hand to dot down for a sensational converted score that extended the Chiefs' lead to eleven points.

However, the Crusaders hit back on the stroke of half-time when Ryan Crotty slid over to narrow the gap. Carter failed to add the extras, but the visitors were back in the hunt at half-time (17-11).

Carter pulled the margin back to a three-point deficit four minutes into the second half, but the Crusaders then saw a rare error from their ace when a penalty kick rolled over the dead-ball line. In resulting play back at halfway the Crusaders conceded a scrum penalty through prop Wyatt Crockett and Cruden goaled to take the score to 20-14.

Though the Chiefs weren't out of the woods yet as Carter slotted over another three points in the 62nd minute, and with a quarter of the match remaining, it was anyone's for the taking.

Carter then missed a chance to send the game into extra time with his stray long-range penalty and a capacity crowd of 25,000 heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Man of the match: The Chiefs pack stood strong in some brutal exchanges, with Sona Taumalolo and Liam Messam getting through a mountain of work. But it's a toss up between Aaron Cruden and Sonny Bill Williams, after both blitzed the Crusaders defence with scintillating breaks on multiple occasions. Cruden showed once more that he is fast evolving into a fly-half of the absolute highest quality, while Williams showed what a loss he will be to New Zealand rugby. Heck, they can share it!

Moment of the match: Messam's try was out the top drawer, but we felt Carter's 76th-minute missed penalty attempt was the moment in the match that had Chiefs and Crusaders' fans with their hearts in their throats.

Villain of the match: Tempers flared, naturally. Usually that means a little pushing and shoving... but no red or yellow cards were shown as a result. Only a white!

Tries: Taumalolo, Messam
Cons: Cruden 2
Pens: Cruden 2

Mew2000: still waiting fr you to defend your moronic comments?

rugbylover: how do you know Trinats comments are purile bile if you don't read them? I'll confirm it for you as i do read it: you're entirely right.

Chiefs shouldn't struggle with winning now. theirs to lose.

Surprised Carter did not show true class when knock-out pressure is highest... perhaps he's human after all and not the perfect 10.

Is that you or has trinats stole your identity i thought it was him at first.

Maybe you are the MartinMarais of NZ with such bitterness.

Congrats to the chiefs you deserve to be in the final and good luck for it

Chiefs, what defence!

Carter has had a few flaky kicks recently, missing touch especially damaging and really schoolboy stuff. Chiefs just seemed really up for it, Messam, SBW, Cruden and Robbie Robinson were great.

I cant decide who I want to win the other match, Sharks so the Chiefs have the home game or Stormers so that the match is in the afternoon and we can arrange a BBQ for the match

Either way the Chiefs to win it!

Nobody with a brain could say that the Crusaders weren't the favourites and no-one could argue that the Chiefs deserved to win. I think we all expect the Stormers to win tomorrow and any rugby fan will hope the Chiefs win the final - just so exciting.

There have been some doubters in relation to SBW - outstanding display - a giant amongst men today!

Lucky with injuries too Their KEY players which are crusden and sbw... Yes they have had alot of injuries but so have alot of teams this year but there key boys have pratically played every game and that makes a difference... Crusaders have not had Mcaw or DC on the field all the time and that makes a difference to how they play. Forgot too add K.read to the list . The chiefs have some good back-ups so that is why I added about the injuries to there key players..

Rampage:What are you smoking? End of blackadder eh? Who would you pick next? You sound like one of those moaning wellington supporters or mcaw is a cheater people? Imports eh how about sbw or Retalich? Everyteam have some people from different areas so stop being stupid! Let me guess you probably bagged Mark Hammet taking over the hurricanes cause he's a cantab? He can't be that bad considering how well the hurricanes played eh?

Well I did say I have been wrong in the past - so Stormers v Chiefs now I couldn't be wrong twice er could I. Well done Chiefs really deserved it, the Crusaders were very un-Crusader like. The good thing for AB rugby out of this is that Dan Carter made more mistakes tonight than he has made in the last 5 years, so there won't be many more this year thats for sure. Who is that Rayz idiot predicting the end of McCaw and Carter - keep hoping chum. Trinats that was real semi final rugby, you get those sort of scores in sudden death, you know like the Reds experienced in 2011 except their opposition that year had minds elswhere - oh what we have said all that before sorry.

Stellenbosched2 I totally agree, I am a Sharks fan and even I will be watching this with nerves for both sides because I really want a South African team to win the tournie, that will be difficult with travelling so much (not an excuse because chiefs are very strong!). If Sharks win I will be very happy but if they went on to loose the tournie i'd almost certainly start blaming the stormers haha ;) just kidding

I had backed the Crusaders.

Hunted down a screen at a pub in this benighted town to watch the game. Only travelled 25km to get there. Well done to the Chiefs, the bustling in-your-face play resulted in many errors by the Mainlanders as did the clever work in attack and defence patterns. Statistics I'd like to see:

# of missed tackles by Crusaders - high

# of "5 or more phases" - low

Excellent refereeing too.

Haha isn't it great to hear the whinging from the disgruntled South Islanders. It is the end of an era for the Crusaders and all their North Island imports in dominating NZ rugby. As the years go on so the failings of Blackadder as a coach will become more apparent. However hope is at hand as there is a rumour that the missionaries are due to arrive and resurrect the hopes of finally developing the South Island and bring it screaming and fighting reluctantly into the 21st century. Now their favourite team has capitulated they can go back to showing how they have an enormous four by two on their shoulders.

One down one to go I think I would like to see the Sharks win not because of the fact I know and have coached John Plumtree in earlier years but because I want to read what Martin Marais has to say if the Sharks become the hope of South Africa.

Trinats, you're typical aussie attitude to rugby is why australia are so dire. Bit of advice, learn the importance of a decent pack of forwards, then build a decent pack of forwards, then you might win something worth winning. Until then you'll keep living in the shadow of real rugby forwards like John Eales and David Wilson without actually knowing what made them great... Jeez, its kinda pathetic really. How can anyone be that ignorant yet still spend time posting on a RU website? Ah well, 6th october. Argentina vs Australia in one of their barb wire fenced football stadiums... thats when the real world is going to come up to you and take an almighty bite outa yer ass.

Great game. Even as a semi-final, I think the red card should have been shown a few times during the first. That would have sorted out the niggle and c*&p and the game would have flowed better. Cannot believe the number of penalties dished out by Joubert and yet no red cards!

Sorry I couldn't see the game, well done Chiefs. From a Stormers supporters point of view I hope we win tomorrows game. From a SA point of view I hope the Stormers win tomorrows game. If the Sharks win I cannot see them being up for another flight to NZ for the final (not making excuses just in case, I really don't think any side would cope with that much travelling).

Well done Chiefs on deserved victory, hard fought as any final should be. Cruden for the AB's, he is pure dynamite. Watching this game just makes me so jealous, AB's spoilt for choice - seems like 99% of the Kiwi players that run on has "international" plastered across their back.

Irrespective of who wins tomorrow - the Chiefs are going to be a handful.

On a side note. Well done Crusaders, you truly are a great team and played with heart and intent. Thanks for making the game a great spectacle.
