Crusaders brush Bulls aside

Zac Guildford crusaders bulls SR 2012

Try: Zac Guildford

The Crusaders booked their place in the Super Rugby semi-finals on Saturday with a 28-13 win over arch-rivals the Bulls in Christchurch.

The seven-time champions must now wait for the result of the second qualifier between the Reds and Sharks to find out whether they must travel to Hamilton to face the Chiefs or Cape Town to meet the Stormers.

History suggested that the Bulls, who have never won in Christchurch, were up against it. And with the penalty count heavily against them, the visitors struggled from the start to trail 16-3 at the interval.

The Bulls outscored the match winners by two tries to one but were the victims of their own mistakes against a polished Crusaders side that controlled the key periods of the game.

The core elements of the Bulls' game - their accurate kicking game, line-out and rolling maul - were malfunctioning horribly in the early stages, meaning they were unable to maintain any sort of pressure on the home side. And once the Crusaders got a decent lead, the result never looked in doubt.

Dan Carter was able to give the hosts a 6-0 lead early on after Zane Kirchner was penalised for not releasing and Dean Greyling was caught offside.

The lead was stretched to 13-0 when Zac Guildford scored the opening try on 26 minutes when Carter drew Steyn, opening a gap for the wing to race home untouched.

Carter added a cheeky drop goal (with his right foot!) to extended the gap to 16 points and although Steyn could pull three points back just before the break, the Crusaders were cruising.

The Bulls weren't helped by a series of injuries either as hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle and both wingers were forced off in the first 45 minutes.

The Crusaders were playing with impressive composure and their error-free display pushed the Bulls into further mistakes. Juandre Kruger was found offside and Steyn hit Carter high, allowing the All Black pivot to add six more points to leave the men in red 22-3 ahead.

The South African side were more accurate in the second period but the horse had already bolted. Just after the hour mark they finally executed a classic line-out and drive with Dewald Potgieter crashing over at the back of the maul.

Carter kept the scoreboard ticking, meaning Wynand Olivier's late try, following a good run from Kirchner, could hardly qualify as consolation for the team from Pretoria.

Man of the match: Dan Carter was his usual brilliant self and ended with a 23-point haul but we'll go for captain fantastic Richie McCaw who, despite playing out of position, showed the world he is still on top of his game.

Moment of the match: Once the home team had a solid lead thanks to Guildford's try, the Bulls were always going to battle to get back into the game.

Villains of the match: All those 'rugby fans' in Christchurch who stayed at home, leaving plenty of open seats at a small ground.

Wallaroo - why don't you simply follow NZ or SA sides and then you can feel more involved?

I know Steyn has his qualities but boy he's offers little on attack. Hougaard's a great halfback, playing behind a great pack, and with someone at 10 attacking the line I'm sure the Bulls (and Boks) could be far more lethal. But tonight they looked fairly one dimensional.

But great team, hard to travel that far and be fresh. I wonder what the result would have been if played in Pretoria.

I don't think the Crusaders really hit 5th gear but they looked so solid. And with Read expected back next week, and assuming Dan and Richie stay fit, I'd doubt the Chiefs will top them.

Crusdaers/Sharks final?

Bulls have been shocking this season...their scrum is wobbly, Steyn is on a woeful run of form and spies isn't what he used to be. Props however to Juandre Kruger, Potgeiter, Hougaard, Basson and (surprisingly) olivier or whatever his name is. They carried their team today.

And just to clarify, the reason why i though the margin couldve been bigger is because the Bulls seemed like they did not want the ball and always kicked it away aimlessly. Lol, pardon me if my previous comment came off a bit arrogant :)

@wallaroo, agreed about the 2 tries to 1.

Well played Crusaders, they never let the Bulls get into it at all. Was suprised to see the Bulls scoring more tries than the Crusaders

Really thought this game would be a cracker, but thanks to a negative approach by the Bulls the game never really got going.

Well done Crusaders never looked like losing and hardly broke sweat. McCaw absoulte master class of a player and leader.

@kitch

Don't worry mate they won't be to far away and will still find something to complain about, even with a good South African ref and no TMO calls all game. In fact I would worried that the world is about to come to an end if they don't. ;)

and Spies....My God. I would expect much more by a captain and a Boks' veteran. Leadership is not there, competency is not there. He would play much better without the burden of captaincy.

As far as Steyn is concerned, this is the player. He is very good when his team are in control, average otherwise. He was seriously targeted today, hope we do not see him again in the Bok's jersey.

Crusaders were magnificent. They will go all the way if they keep this up. McCaw continues to show that he is one of a handful of truly GREAT players over the ages.

Would love to see a sharks crusader final....

Wallaroo - outscoring tries totally irrelevant at this stage of comp, no bonus points on offer, Crusaders content to chip away via Carter as Bulls were just as content to give away penalties. Cs backed off so much in second half, damage already done; just as it appears to be in the other game on now, 20-3 after 30min.

Agree. Boring game. The Bulls were outplayed in every department. As said in the prediction, I would have been surprised if the Bulls managed to keep a break margin.

Fantastic penalty management by Crusaders, they conceded nothing where did not matter and made one or two crucial ones within 5m (yellow card? Yes). In any case, full, deserved and comprehensive win by the Saders, congratulations. Hope that HM could learn a thing or two from this loss for the Boks. I do not think that any of the boys in blue can make the Boks.

The only worrying thing for the Saders is that they seem unable to transform their domination into points, the gap at the end does not reflect the difference between the two teams, although the game was in control since Guildford's try.

Great game from McCaw at eight, this position seems ok to him and his new kilos (belly).

Finally, Zac, what about a nice haircut?

if the bulls concentrated on their own game and not keep winging to the ref they may have done alot better!... im not a fan of ellis but he had a good game.. speis was nullified as was hougaard and steyn just had one of those days !!

spies very humble in defeat

just waiting for the mccheat/cheatsader brigade to arrive now!

@tweedledee49, the margin should have been bigger, the Bulls were lucky.

@ABlack, good point. The it's almost like the Bulls had a dislike for the ball and a love affair with defeat. As a Tahs supporter I feel a whole lot better lol.

Bulls borrowed the Waratahs game plan; aimless at times and the tactic of kicking to Dagg and co was not the best idea. Steyn far from the weapon he'd been built up to be, a below average showing.

Re the crowd - 3500 empty seats. Better than earlier predictions.

well the bulls are known for not being an exciting team... The only team lately more boring is the stormers , the cheetahs are good to watch !! Some of us cantabs would be at home watching the game when it gets too damn cold to watch the game late in the night in the middle of winter!!

Well done Crusaders a deserved victory.

Who'd thought the Bulls would outscore the Crusaders 2 tries to 1, however the best thing in this game was Carter teaching Steyn how to kick drop goals lol.
