Rene Ranger: Moving on?

According to reports in New Zealand, Blues centre Rene Ranger is set for a switch to Top 14 outfit Montpellier at the end of the Super Rugby season.

Sky's Reunion program broadcast the news, with the 26-year-old having recently been handed greater responsibility for the Auckland franchise.

This week Ranger faces off with New Zealand outside centre rival Robbie Freuan in the Blues versus Crusaders derby clash at Eden Park.

And with Tamati Ellison injured, Richard Kahui leaving for Japan and Sonny Bill Williams now in Australia, it is viewed as strange timing to move.

Montpelier is a good side, performing very well at the moment in the Top 14 and the money is incredible in France. I understand Kiwi frustrations at losing top talent, but come on... be realistic. First of all Ranger hasn't been integrated into the All Blacks set up for a while other than an odd extended squad appearance. He never looked like getting repeat caps in recent years and the NZ teams simply don't pay that well. So to summarise: no games for the national squad and crap wages, or no games for the national squad and great wages. Obvious choice. If the AB's wanted him to stick around they should have cemented him with a place in the AB squad.

This just pisses me off. Will you ahole's just fricken develop your own talent for a change. If we had the money to throw around we would have no need to even consider your player pool. Do you not have enough decent French players?

today's NZ Herald reports he's going to Montpellier on 30,000 Euros ($48,000) a month - far more than he could ever earn in NZ as a Super/AB player (if selected); also that he turned down a higher offer from a Japanese club.

best wishes, Mr Ranger.

Rene is looking very emotional there. Is this a scene from a forthcoming episode of The Almighty Johnsons where Rene finds out that his previously long lost Auntie Jean is a Norse goddess who's turned herself into a punch bag and he rushes over to give her a big hug??? "AUNTIE J!!!! WHERE YA BEEN FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS!?!?!"

What? Have you seen the plot lines for that program, this one is not that far fetched. ;)

I always felt he would have made a better league player anyway.

Good luck to him.

These are the guys we can't afford to lose too many of: been around a while, may never be an AB except in the case of multiple injuries (remember Jason O'Halloran?) but a good yardstick to measure the newbies against. Sad if true but good luck to him, a man's gotta look after his family.

If so, yet another talent never fully realised, much like Toeava. Shame NZ loses all these players, sometimes it's amazing they can even field an International team they lose so many.

Money talks.

These rumours often come true so it could well happen. Maybe he doubts his chances of AB caps??
