Buderus to Brumbies blocked by NRL

Move blocked: Danny Buderus

Australia's National Rugby League has blocked a move from the Brumbies to employ former league international Danny Buderus as their tackling guru.

Buderus, who has played 24 internationals, had earlier been announced by the Brumbies as joining Jake White's coaching staff. But the NRL reacted swiftly and sought an explanation from Buderus' NRL club, Newcastle Knights.

"Neither Danny Buderus nor the Knights have sought permission from the NRL to enter into a third party agreement as his playing contract requires and as the club is required under the salary cap rules," acting NRL Chief Executive Shane Mattiske said in a statement.

"It is hard to envisage any circumstance where an agreement could be approved that allowed a current NRL player to promote another code competing in the same market as an NRL team."

White, the former South Africa World Cup-winning coach, had sought out Buderus to help improve his team's defence in his second season at the Brumbies and saw the former 34-year-old Test hooker as the perfect mentor to make that happen.

In 15 years as a league player, Buderus captained New South Wales to their last State of Origin series win over Queensland in 2005, won an NRL Grand Final with the Knights in 2001 and an English Super League title with Leeds in 2011.

It was to be a collision coach, which I think was about being agressive in the tackle.

Peter Ryan, a former Brisbane Bronco that played for the Brumbies and later became there tackle coach was on the record saying that in rugby league they seem to be more agressive in the tackle. Well Peter Ryan certainly was.

Hey bones we could use a tackling coach-did you see us last night v France? We need all the help we can get! Even if it is via a feeder team...

Bones, I'm not so familiar with the NRL but at one point they were hiring wrestling coaches to teach their players how to use leverage against a player in the tackle. They ended up outlawing a few wrestling techniques that were deemed dangerous but I assume they still have experts that focus on tackling. Perhaps it's an innovation union could adopt

I've never heard of a tackling coach. Tackling is fairly straitforward surely? How many Super Rugby players don't know how to tackle? It seems a very precise point of the game to focus on although if there are scrum coaches and kicking coaches then I don't see why not. Does anyone know if Buderus does something in the tackle that is that effective? Don't know much about the bloke myself

C'mon NRL, you don't even pick him for the NSW side (bcoz of Farah and Ennis), let alone for the Kangaroos (who have skipper Cameron Smith). Greedy bunch, who have no love for the ARU

Ridiculous, if the guys wants to go let him go. If he stays against his will in league he's not going to put his heart and soul into his job.

Hold on a minute ,The Brumbies are wanting to employ him as their tackling coach ,if i read this right ,not as a player.Last i looked their a massive differance between the 2 roles, one teaches ,while the other does. But then maybe theres more to it than appears on te face of it ??
