Tight tussle: The Welsh again proved to be the Irish's nemesis

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked a 79th-minute penalty to break Irish hearts and steal a 23-21 Six Nations win in Dublin on Sunday.

Revenge was on the menu for Ireland following their World Cup exit against the Welsh, but defeat is what they were served at the Aviva Stadium where they have now lost three games on the trot.

At 21-15, it looked like Ireland's game for the taking with five minutes left on the clock and Wales lock Bradley Davies in the bin. However, the visitors had other ideas and cut the deficit to a one-point ball game through a George North try.

Halfpenny missed the conversion to take the lead, but held his nerve to slot over a last-gasp penalty four minutes later - after Stephen Ferris was sin-binned for a tip tackle on Ian Evans - to deny the Irish and help open his team's Six Nations account with an upset win.

Wales played with an energy that Ireland failed to match for the majority of the first half, and were desperately unlucky not to have a try awarded early on by the TMO who - after several replays - decided it was "inconclusive" after a sea of red jerseys barged over the line.

But the Welsh weren't to be denied again by the TMO following centre Jonathan Davies's well-worked try in the corner that was set up by Rhys Priestland, but which the pivot failed to convert.

Priestland, in doubt for this match before he was declared fit to play on Friday, showed no signs of discomfort from the knee injury that kept him out of action for two weeks with ball in hand.

However, he was off-target with the boot after missing his second shot at goal with a penalty attempt from bang in front that would have extended his team's lead to five points.

Instead, it was Ireland who managed to find some spark produced from a rare attack inside Wales' 22 that started with Tommy Bowe breaking the line and ended with hooker Rory Best crossing the whitewash for a crucial score before half-time.

Sexton added the extras from far out and Ireland went into the half-time sheds 10-5 in front.

Ireland opened up the second half in the same fashion as they did the first courtesy of another three points from Sexton.

Halfpenny, who had taken on the kicking duties, landed a long-range attempt in reply and centre Davies capitalised on North's bulldozing run for a superb second try.

Halfpenny converted but Wales' lead was only brief as Sexton booted a tricky penalty and, when Bradley Davies was sin-binned for tipping Donnacha Ryan on his head, Bowe soon scored in the corner after taking a magnificent pass from his pivot.

Sexton missed the conversion and a penalty - both difficult kicks - and the irrepressible North crashed over only for Halfpenny to miss the conversion before accepting the second invite after Ferris's indiscretion.

Man of the match: For Ireland, Tommy Bowe created one and scored one, while Jamie Heaslip was the pick of the Irish forwards. For Wales, Ryan Jones ran hard and offered Wales leadership when Sam Warburton had left the pitch through injury and Jonathan Davies richly deserved his two-try haul. However, wing George North was undoubtedly Wales' star man. He bullied Ireland's backline at will, showing superb skill setting up Davies's second try and tremendous strength for his own five-pointer. Who needs Shane Williams when you got this guy out wide?

Moment of the match: Take your pick... Davies' second try... Bowe's five-pointer... North's score... Halfpenny's last-gasp penalty. This game was full of them!

Villain of the match: There's two of them - Bradley Davies and Stephen Ferris, with the latter's brain implosion ultimately proving very costly indeed.

Cons: Sexton
Pens: Sexton 3

Yes, Wayne Barnes is a fool, but vwd to Wales and Ireland - it proves 6N rugby can be quality (after that awful dross at Murrayfield yest), and I think both these sides will have a good 6N campaign.

Sure Ireland were not great: on the French commentary (which I was listening to), Fabien Galthié kept saying that the Irish 'were just reacting, not creating' .. and this sort of sums up the game. The back row were immense as usual and Trimble and Bowe did alright but the mid-field needs looking at. Frankly, Paddy Wallace could've done as well as either D'Arcy or McFadden .. but we need more than that: we need players capable of breaking through in midfield à la Rougerie. Maybe the combination ROG and Sexton at 12 is the one to pursue. After all, when Mike Gibson moved from out half to centre a satr was born. (Although I still maintain he was one of the greatest outhalves ever).

Back to the match: Wales thoroughly deserved to win - every time they threw it wide they looked dangerous. And they never give up. Very good team ... but the French will trounce them, again.

Well deserved Win for Wales!!

It was a red, although it was also a yellow for the cheap shot on Adam Jones. Also the Rhian Jones touch down was a try, both Welsh & Irish accepted it, just could not see it via the replay. So i guess no excusses overall Wales def deserved the WIN!!

D'arcy and McFadden are only threading water, offer little threat going forward. Wales seem to have the monopoly on big dangerous backs. Might be time to move Bowe to 13 and bring Luke Fitzgerald or Zebo in on the wing. I'd also move Ferris to no No 4, move SOB to 6 and bring a different option in at 7 but not sure who could do the job. Jennings or O'Mahony? Some tough calls for Kidney this week but the performance was very muted today. Criminal for such an experienced team not to close out the game with 2 mins to play. Not enough raw aggression and attitude for long spells in the game.

When will people (Kidney included) realise that the Irish backrow is ridiculously unbalanced? O'Brien is NOT a 7. This isn't rocket science. Then again, who do you put in there? Ireland don't have a specialist openside, simple as that. Maybe the IRFU should address that instead of kicking out the provinces' foreign players.

p.s. North is genuine class. Very exciting player.

Ireland fans blame Wayne Barnes for actually following the rules on tip tackles (note: Barnes didnt see the incident with Davies and acted on advice from his assistant), instead you should take a look at your team. Funny though that you thought you were the best team in 6nations prior to today - try and rethink that philosophy. And what it is up with the booing from Ireland and Scotland fans - feeling the pressure are we?

I think we need to start ROG at 10 (and let him take the kicks), Sexton at 12 and bowe at 13, then earls and trimble on the wings. We need some sort of solution for the abysmal D'arcy and Sextons poor kicking and decision making.

Penalty at the end was harsh...but Wales have been on receiving end of decisions so possibly time they had some luck though sorry it had to be Ireland ( Mike Phillips wrong ball last year )

But a cracking game.

Is Hook on his way back to form ?

A great games, which sadly will no doubt attract a lot of attention for the tip tackles. I think we all would agree that the IRB need to look at this area of the game again.

The Bradley Davies tackle should have seen a red card, but shouldn't have happened as it was a reaction to a blatant foul, that should have resulted in a penalty and yellow card itself. Sadly the officials got pretty much everything wrong with the incident.

Wales probably just deserved the win (they scored more points and the penalty against Gill in the scrum was awarded the wrong way). What a game by North though. I trust that is what we all remember. Lets focus on the positives and not the negatives.

Very good game. North was superb. I also liked a lot Ryan Jones, he did so well around the rack and even a sweet little kick. Haplfpenny should have kick from the beginning as well.

That yellow on Ferris's "dangerous" tackle was a total shocker from the ref while Davis's yellow should have been a red card. I'm sure he's gonna get cited.

All in all a great game. well done Wales!

Wales deserved to win. Too many poor performances from the Irish side. D'arcy is gone, OCallaghan too, kidney has to make a call ferris or Obrien? They'll be hammered in France

Wayne Barnes take a bow you clown, Wales were the better side but Ireland had the win, Wales were off their feet contesting the ball in their own half with 2 minutes left and Barnes gave them the pen, He also gave them a pen for a spear tackle what a joke spear tackle where ferris lifted 1 leg and the player fell over not a spear not a pen and this joke of a ref decided to gift wales the win what an awful awful ref. Spear tackle by Davies was a red and he and that clown Pearson called it yellow. Ireland were poor Darcy is useless, ROG 10 $exy 12 or we will go nowhere!

so my first prediction has come to fruition...the mediocrity is upon us (although, i admit, faster than i had expected). time for some national soul-searching...

next up, a royal stuffing in paris, followed quickly by the glorious return of that world-class, lightning-quick rock in defence...yes, you know who i'm talking about...he'll drop-goal us to a couple of laboured wins at home over scotland and italy...and then....

fear not, soldiers of destiny! we fighting irish, the perennial underdogs, will rise to the occasion on st. patrick's day when we batter those english devils (remember? 800 years of oppression and all that grrrr) in twickenham. then, we'll quickly forget about these dark days and everything will be alright in the world! eireann go bragh!!!
