Hard: Jacques Burger

Saracens rugby director Mark McCall labelled his team "phenomenal" after they overcame Clermont 46-6 in their Heineken Cup semi-final on Saturday.

The Premiership side scored six tries against the French outfit at Twickenham as they booked their place in a final against either Toulon or Munster.

And for boss McCall it was a day to savour as he watched his men thump the Top 14 heavyweights from start to finish in a win built on fierce tackling.

"I thought it was a phenomenal performance," McCall told Saracens' official website.

"It was built on effort, work rate and the plan was to put them under pressure which they haven't been under all season. I think we achieved that.

"Today was one of those days that everything that could have gone right went right. We know today is tremendous memory for us, but it's hopefully a vehicle for something bigger and better towards the end of May. The atmosphere in the group, the fight they had for each other was magnificent, we want to carry that forward now."

McCall added his praise for flanker Jacques Burger, who was named man-of-the-match.

"Jacques' story is incredible," said the 46-year-old.

"He was out if rugby for 18 months and this time last year when he came back he didn't look right, it looked like it may be over for him.

"People don't know what he does everyday, he has an ice machine called a Gameready that is his best friend, he ices his knee about five times a day and it's an incredible sacrifice for him to play in games like this. He was an inspiration today, we know he'll give everything he has for the team. just as every other player did today."
