Main man: Jamie George

Saracens hooker Jamie George's call-up to the England Saxons squad is down to patience according to the player and his coach.

George was forced to spend his first few seasons with the first team as the third-choice hooker behind South Africa duo John Smit and Schalk Brits.

Now a regular in the first XV and a try scorer in Saracens convincing 64-3 win over Zebre last weekend.

"He's not a prospect, he's a proper player now," McCall told the Telegraph.

"He plays as much as Schalk Brits does, he's served his three or four-year apprenticeship, which was the right timescale for him, now he just plays."

George revealed that whilst there was frustration at times being left out of the matchday squad, he was now relishing his opportunity to take centre stage.

"I'm a home-grown boy so there was never anything better than the idea of playing for Saracens," said George.

"I was 24th man for the majority of two seasons and then played a bit last season. It can be frustrating at times but I feel like I have bided my time and now it's great to be playing and to be involved and to progress every week. I'm loving it.

"It's nice for me to have the confidence from the coaches to be selected. The last few years a lot of people thought I might be getting frustrated and, yes, there were frustrations at times.

"But, looking back now, it was probably the best thing for me. Everything came very easily to start with coming through the England age groups but then I had something to fight for."

George was one of nine try scorers in the win over Zebre to keep Saracens ahead of Toulouse on points difference at the top of Pool 3.

"The main thing was our performance. We weren't quite there for 80 minutes last week," added George.

"But this week we were fantastic all the way through and Chris Ashton's try at the end capped it off."
