Sarries fight back to knock Racing out

11/11: Owen Farrell

Saracens took control of Heineken Cup Pool One thanks to a 37-28 win over Racing Métro, despite being outscored three tries to one in Nantes on Saturday.

Racing led 25-12 after 30 minutes but fell apart in the second half as Sarries fly-half Owen Farrell massacred the hosts from the kicking tee, finishing with a perfect record from eleven attempts at goal.

The result means that victory at home to out-of-form Edinburgh next week will secure Saracens top spot in the pool and a place in the quarter-finals. Racing must travel to Munster in a battle for second place.

The hosts started like a train at Stade de la Beaujoire and, after David Strettle had picked up an early injury, his fellow backs Chris Ashton and Richard Wigglesworth were powerless to stop the enormous prop Luc Ducalcon forcing his way over from short range inside the opening 10 minutes.

Ashton's error under a high ball then afforded Racing the opportunity to run in a second try and Juan Imhoff gleefully accepted it and dived over in the right-hand corner after an excellent floated pass from Fabrice Estebanez.

Imhoff's second and the French side's third then arrived moments later as Juan Martin Hernandez shrugged off Joel Tomkins far too easily before providing the killer pass for his countryman to score in the corner again.

Saracens then lost their discipline as well as their defensive shape as Will Fraser was sent to the sin bin for a late hit on Hernandez and Sebastien Descons added a penalty to his two previous conversions.

Oddly enough, Saracens only faced a 10-point deficit though as Farrell kicked a penalty almost immediately after the kick-off following each of the French team's scores.

Descons slotted over another three points before the half-hour mark but Farrell responded again with two more penalties of his own after Fijian Jone Qovu was sent to the sin bin himself for a late shoulder charge on the Sarries fly-half.

The Londoners will have been delighted to head into the break trailing by just seven points after a whirlwind first half in which they were distinctly second best and they drew level in the early stages of the second half.

They may have been fortunate to have been in touching distance at half-time but their play after the interval owed much more to skill and determination than luck and Chris Wyles got the try to level the scores after great work from Farrell and Tomkins.

Farrell added the conversion and three further penalties to just one from Descons as the second half developed into a far tighter and edgier affair than the first.

Saracens survived another period down to 14 men when Ashton was given a harsh yellow card and they soaked up everything Racing could throw at them before sealing an improbable victory with a remarkable tenth penalty from the flawless boot of their young England fly-half.

@colvin

Well if you look at my comments in the last few Saracen matches in the Heineken Cup they were far from positive. Do your research first!

Anyway, what were Saracens meant to do? If every time you attack your opponent fouls then how many tries are you going to score? The All Blacks almost always take the points when they're on offer, and that's just what Saracens did.

I've noticed that those who mentioned it was a great game were supporters of Saracens.

I wonder if those Saracens supporters would still have considered it a great game if their team had lost after scoring 3 tries to 1 because the other side kicked 10 penalty goals.

I don't know why French teams bother with matches under UK refs - they should just negotiate their [losing] score.

The game is not in trouble, there are many way to win a game. Despite the number of penalties it was a very entertaining game, did you not see it?

Well, I don't know. Amazing kicking by Owen Farrell. But If you think winning a match by kicking 10 penalty goals is rugby, the game really is in trouble.

I can still recall the uproar when the ABs beat the Lions 18-17 in Dunedin (the ABs with 6 penalty goals, the Lions with 4 tries) The point is NZers at the time were happy to take the win but knew the game shouldn't be won that way.

Now 6 penalty goals for one side is common. But 10? Surely the rules need looking at.

Well done to Sarries - they were certainly handed that on a plate by entirely avoidable penalties in the first half.

-Brilliant match and a great example of how a team can pull together to be greater than the sum of it's parts.

-Faultless display for Farrell who's tackling and nerveless kicking was international class.

-Yet another dire match for Ashton. Missed tackles leading to one try, knocked on an easy catch for another, and a yellow card. Yet somehow he's still in the England squad. It's a joke, we must be the most forgiving country in the world when it comes to worthless wingers.

- I agree with others saying Estebanez deserves a ban.

-Anyone heard how bad Strettle's injury is?

'wouldnt be to surpised if Racing get 5 points next week either.' With nothing to play for, away, in thomond park when munster might have their qualification on the line?

Even with this Munster team playing this poorly I don't know where you get your predictions from

...Now he's ready to be talked about in regards to test match rugby. Brilliant display.

Well Sarries stayed organised and won, whilst Racing lost the plot. Punished for indiscipline throughout they really let down their supporters despite setting off for the first 30 minutes like an express train. Estebanez deserves a real ban for a very cheap shot. Not too impressed with Ashtons self control either he could have avoided that yellow no problem. Anyone watching him would think a little bit of ribbing and a few tugs and trips and the guy will lose his rag no problem.(Touch of what O'Driscoll did to Henson years ago would send Ashton through the roof) Great control by Farrell, you have to admit the guy is incredibly steady, Racing will hate to see his face again.

@ melkdave: I wasn't that much impressed by Sarries; sure they played well in second half but it's Racing who kept them in the match by giving them 12 or 15 easy points - a penalty for each restart!

I'm not sure they will feel concerned next week as they cannot qualify any more while Munster might still have a chance.

I've got to admit I was impressed by Racing's first 30 min. But that was typical of them this year: a few sparkles of brilliance followed by dour, bitter, long periods of nonsense.

I hope Estebanez gets a lengthy ban for his overall contribution.

That was just a fantastic match, lots of intensity, passion and both teams giving 100%.Saracens have shown they are a team to be reckoned with this season.Their workrate and commitment to eachother is outstanding, and once they sorted the defence out just litterally overpowered Racing. What a match, wouldnt be to surpised if Racing get 5 points next week either.
