London Wasps boss Dai Young was understandably disappointed to see his side fall to a last-gasp 17-15 defeat to Northampton Saints.

Saints pivot Stephen Myler landed a 40-metre scrum penalty with the last kick of the match to ensure Wasps were downed at Adams Park.

"It was a hard decision to accept as it was for non-engagement at the first set," said Young post-match.

"It was the first penalty for that offence during the game when there was reset after reset.

But although gutted by the nature of the loss, Young was keen to praise the efforts of his charges.

"Nobody expected us to win today; it was a massive challenge against a quality team in a very physical game," added Young.

"The players didn't get what they deserved for with 30 seconds to go I thought we were home."

Jim Mallinder, Young's opposite number at Saints, admitted the visitors were lucky to leave Adams Park with all four points.

"The referee made a couple of close decisions. He made a brave decision at the first scrum and we were lucky it went our way," said Mallinder.

"Stephen Myler is steady in those circumstances and kicked very well throughout the game."

Match-winner Myler missed only one kick from five attempts, with Mallinder hailing his side's defensive efforts.

"Defensively we were very strong but we gave away a couple of penalties for over exuberance.

"Wasps put us under a lot of pressure as we just couldn't get out of our own half," added Mallinder.

"It was a massive win for us, away from home just before Christmas but we always knew it would be hard down here as last year we won with a try in the last minute."
