Harlequins boss Conor O'Shea was left baffled after his side suffered a 35-5 LV= Cup defeat to Cardiff Blues on Friday.

O'Shea described the result as "bizarre", given that his side dominated the possession and territory.

Quins trailed 14-5 at half-time at the Arms Park but the hosts ran away with it after the break and scored 21 unanswered points.

The Blues scored five tries to one, with Filo Paulo, Gavin Evans, Dan Fish, Tom Williams and Marc Breeze on the scoresheet for Cardiff and Ollie Lindsay-Haugue replying for the Premiership side.

"The competitor in you is very disappointed with a result like that," said O'Shea.

"We hadn't conceded four tries in a match this season. But we had a lot of youngsters out there - we brought on two 17-year-old forwards in the second half - and it was great experience for them."

O'Shea feels his team should have been awarded an early try when Paul Trayford crossed the line, but was most upset for his captain Tom Guest.

"It was his 200th appearance for us and I thought he was outstanding," he added.

He deserved better than that."

Cardiff's new back-line coach, Paul John, agreed that the scoreline was somewhat odd and admitted his side were far from their best during the first half.

"We were giving the ball away in the first half and conceded a string of penalties, so goodness knows how we were 14-5 up at the interval," he said.

"In the second half we kept the ball better, played territory better and in the end it was very pleasing to score five tries and get a win for everyone."
