David Humphreys: Restricted by the salary cap

Gloucester chairman Ryan Walkinshaw has revealed that the club will not be signing any more players ahead of the upcoming Aviva Premiership season.

Walkinshaw said the Cherry and Whites have spent up to the salary cap after signing several new players, including front-row pair John Afoa and Richard Hibbard while Greig Laidlaw and James Hook boost their half-back options.

Gloucester also have a newly-appointed director of rugby David Humphreys and a new coaching staff headed by Laurie Fisher, who joins the club after the Brumbies' Super Rugby campaign.

Most of the players were brought in by former director of rugby Nigel Davies but the new coaching staff will have to work with the players they have in their ranks and not bring in new ones.

"We are right up to the salary cap and there is no more to do," Walkinshaw told the Gloucester Citizen.

"That can obviously change during a season with injury dispensations but the squad is complete and this is what you will see this season.

"This is the most exciting squad we have had in a very long time and there's not a single penny left."

Davies' two-year stint with the Cherry and Whites came to an end after they finished a disappointing ninth place in the Premiership standings with a year of his contract still to run.

Walkinshaw has since identified the areas that require the most work and is optimistic Humphreys will take the club to greater heights in the upcoming campaign.

"I would like to get the playing group back to the level where they should be and we have been taking steps to do that," he added.

"I'm very confident David Humphreys is the man who can take us several steps forward.

"He will be a pure director of rugby like you see at Harlequins and Ulster and that works very well. I'm sure he will deliver a lot of positive change.

"Off the field I want to ensure the steady growth of the club and to continue to improve the commercial side.

"We are in a good position with our partners and have a great fan base. We have to build on that fan base and continue to ensure we deliver top-end commercial services on a match day.

"It is hard to look too long term because as you have seen with the changes in European rugby this year things can change rapidly.

"But the dream goal is to have the club regularly up there with the ability to win the Premiership, competing in top tier European finals while sustainable on the commercial side."
