Tavis Knoyle: Banned for four weeks

Gloucester scrum-half Tavis Knoyle and prop Sila Puafisi have been banned after being sent off in last weekend's Premiership clash with Bath.

A Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing in London suspended Knoyle for four weeks for striking Leroy Houston.

Puafisi received a one-week ban for a dangerous tackle on Nick Abendanon.

Both players pleaded guilty, with Puafisa set to return to action on April 22 and Knoyle on May 20.

Knoyle's attack on Houston sparked a mass brawl after Bath were awarded a match-winning penalty try.

Referee Tim Wigglesworth also issued yellow cards to five players in the encounter which left Gloucester playing with 11 players by the end.

All five escaped censure but Bath's Abendanon and Paul James were given post-match Level One citings - the equivalent of a foul play yellow card - for striking Knoyle and a stamp on Shaun Knight respectively. No hearings were held for these citings.

The RFU and Gloucester are liaising over a separate incident during the match, in which an empty drinks bottle was thrown at Wigglesworth.

The referee appeared to have been targeted as he left the field while being escorted after the final whistle.

"I don't think anybody could look at it and say it was the greatest advert for the game, both in terms of the things that happened off and on the pitch," said RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie.

Gloucester have launched their own investigation into the bottle throwing incident and discovered the object was thrown from the seats occupied by a group of teenage boys on an escorted rugby tour.

The club will take action pending further discussions.
