Why not do as the North American hockey (and football and basketball) do, is enter all up and comers into a draft. The weakest teams get to draft first and all teams have a salary cap. Thus, you can't just throw money at someone, and the league gets to be more competitive.

@JayStarr - you're right that it doesn't make it right, I was just demonstrating it isn't that remarkably. Wish I had your confidence that it wouldnt happen again.

@ makemehappy: Just because football does it doesn't make it right. We shouldn't confuse "professionalism" with "anything goes". Trying to influence a minor with offers of massive sums of money is UNETHICAL. Remember ethics? We can't allow money to rule the world and everything in it - at some point we still need to decide what is right and wrong. I always thought rugby was one of the sports who still did things honourably - and most other unions in South Africa do.
Anyway, that practice has now been banned by SARU, so it won't happen again.

Why are people now 'stand-out' players, when the word 'outstanding' has been perfectly suitable?
@JayStarr - surely you can't expect a province not to coax a talented player if aged 16? It is a professional game, with business entities and a sport such as football has done this for years, all over the world!

@ RugbyLeRoux & jonesy2 & bokmashoffice & Dylbull: Province DID want him - but they are not in the habit of contracting their (hundreds of) talented 18-year-olds... nevermind run after 16-year-olds as the Bulls did in this case! The first time they heard about it was when a journalist uncovered it a few months ago. Then there was a big hoo-ha, with the Bulls saying it's absolute nonsense - and even Handr¿ dad denying it too. So then Province said, "well in that case we'd like to have an opportunity to enter the negotiations" - which turned out to be pointless, because a deal HAS been made. Both the Bulls and Handr¿ dad were lying. Why would you lie if things were done legitimately?
No, I'm sorry - the Bulls can now officially be labelled "cradle snatchers". There is nothing reasonable Province could've done in this scenario. simply because the Bulls acted so UNreasonably. An action which is now rightly (but sadly too late) ILLEGAL. For good reason...
The Bulls have been identifying and buying Province (their biggest rivals') best young talent - from a very early age - and then tempting them to come play for them by throwing big money at them (just look at Francois Hougaard). In my opinion this is as much a ploy to strenghten their own ranks as well as attempting to weaken those of their biggest rivals. They are underhanded, sneaky and dishonourable...
But we'll still beat them for the next 10 years. (As we've been doing this year, Dylbull - bonus points or not. Why don't you just concentrate on making the play-offs...;)

You know what, if you can grow up on the stands of Newlands, but then decide to go play for the Bulls... because they offered more MONEY, then GO.
It's sad, but I'd rather prefer guys playing for Province who has as much passion for Province as their supporters do. That's why we love guys like Schalk Burger, JdV, Joe Pietersen, Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh, etc. All of them could be making far more money if they accepted offers by other unions or clubs, but they came back because of their passion for Province - or never even left in the first place.
The Bulls on the other hand are raiders - skulking around schoolboy rugby fields, making shady deals, tempting young guys and their parents with lots of money.... It's disgusting. I mean, they approached him when he was 16 YEARS OLD!? Come on. That's disgraceful!
Anyway, Western Province are going to continue dominating this decade with the amount of young (HOME-GROWN) talent they have coming through (Etzebeth, Kitshoff, Malherbe, Schreuder, Carr, etc.) The majority of the Baby Boks team who won the world title were also Province boys... So Handré has to ask himself if it was such a wise move. I bet Sadie is regretting his decision already...

oh yes stormers rugby is so much better than bulls rugby, I forgot
Who has played a more defensive brand of rugby? who has the least bonus points and the second least tries scored in the entire competition? that's right the stormers.
It's a professional sport... so yes there is money involved
why is this a bad thing, these guys have a short period to make their money
so why not?
The bulls got him first...

I am assuming that Wp did not want to sign him up. Its a professional game and the lad is looking out for him. I guess he could learn from Steyn which is not a bad thing for player development.

philipjfry -- you can only blame province for not aptly noticing talent and signing it. bulls have done the right thing although i see where youre coming from

I agree with @philipjfry. He should be drafted to WP and as I am from the Cape myself I personally would prefer to play WP/Stormers rugby, but on the plus side the sooner Pollard breaks into the Bulls 1st team the sooner we can get rid of Steyn from the Bok side and pick someone who can land a penalty!

Look, I know rugby is a professional sport and that moving away from the nursery to get a pro contract is the norm, but this kid was born in Somerset-West and is finishing his schooling at Paarl Gym; he should be playing for Province, not the Bulls. What am I missing?
