Crusaders lock Sam Whitelock will take no part in New Zealand's three-Test series against France after breaking his ring finger.

The 24-year-old, who has been a standout player during the current Super Rugby season, suffered the injury during his side's 28-19 defeat at the hands of the Chiefs on Friday.

“Sam will undergo a follow-up X-ray after which we should have a clearer picture of the injury and what that means for his return to rugby,” All Black coach Steve Hansen said in a statement.

“While this is disappointing for Sam, and for the All Blacks, one man's misfortune is another man's opportunity, so we look forward to seeing that opportunity being realised.”

The injury blow comes hot on the heels of Ali Williams decision to retire from international rugby, leaving the All Blacks short of premier experience in the second row.
