Tries from backline duo Gareth Owen and Kristian Phillips were enough for the Scarlets to win 26-13 over Newport Gwent Dragons.

Tries from backline duo Gareth Owen and Kristian Phillips were enough for the Scarlets to win 26-13 over Newport Gwent Dragons.

There were contrasting team changes for this clash with scrum-half Gareth Davies recovering from concussion to return for Scarlets, and Lee Byrne a late withdrawal for the Dragons due to a back problem.

But the visitors shrugged off his absence early on scoring the first points of the game after eight minutes, fly-half Jason Tovey scoring an easy penalty after the Newport forwards found their groove at the scrum.

Tovey’s penalty though was soon equalled and then improved upon as Rhys Priestland scored with his first two efforts of the afternoon.

The first try came soon after with Owen scoring under the posts. The outside centre scored his second try of the season and allowed Priestland to convert with minimal fuss.

Priestland was then able to extend the lead 15 minutes after the restart with the visitors penalised for a block.

Phillips made the game safe with 65 minutes on the clock, chipping and chasing to good effect.

The Dragons did cross late on through Richie Rees but a comeback never truly looked on the cards and replacement Steven Shingler scored the final points of the match with a simple penalty two minutes from time.

The Scarlets moved into the top half of the table with the win whilst for the Dragons it was another defeat and their low-scoring attack will be a continued worry for director of rugby Lyn Jones.
