Welsh derby win for Scarlets

Date published: October 28 2016

Scarlets claimed the bragging rights from Friday's Welsh derby with a deserved 26-15 victory over Cardiff Blues at Cardiff Arms Park.

The result rarely looked in doubt, and even less so when Hadleigh Parkes secured a bonus point-winning try less than a minute into the second half.

It was a disappointing night for Cardiff though as they were overtaken in the table by Scarlets. Aaron Shingler opened the scoring with a try, though he had to work hard for it as his outstretched arm only just made contact with the ball as it crossed the line with Rhys Patchell adding the extras.

Soon after, the advantage was doubled with Jonathan Evans going over after great attacking work from DTH van der Merwe, but the hosts replied instantaneously through Tom James who made the most of a slack pass from Tom Barclay inside his own 22 with the conversion also being notched, 7-14 after 20 minutes.

Scarlets scored the fourth try of the affair with Aled Thomas intercepting Shingler's pass before racing away with the ball and offloading it to Van der Merwe who did the rest, with Patchell converting.

Just 38 seconds into the second half, Parkes was played clean through after a superb break from Patchell affording Scarlets their well-deserved bonus point. After that, it became a scrappier affair with both sides struggling to create clear cut chances, let alone finish them off.

Steven Shingler did add three points to the visitors' tally with a simple penalty 10 minutes into the restart, but it was the hosts' Blaine Scully who stole the second half headlines with a fantastic finish into the corner after a darting run, though Shingler's conversion was not of the same standard as it whistled wide.

As the game descended into its final moments, Cardiff became desperate to take something away from the match, but even a losing bonus point evaded them as Scarlets held strong for the maximum five points.
