‘We had to dig deep’ – Freddie Burns

Bath fly-half Freddie Burns admitted his side "had to dig deep" in their 32-9 victory over Northampton at the Recreation Ground on Friday.

Burns was man-of-the-match as Bath won to go third in the Premiership table and afterwards he was full of praise for how Saints started.

“Credit to Saints, they’ve turned a corner in the last few weeks and came out and put us under some pressure," he told Premiership Rugby.

“We had to dig deep, stay true to ourselves and we managed to get the scoreboard ticking and got the tries on the board in the second half.

“It was a sticky first half so to score that try right on the half meant going into the changing rooms we were a lot more confident we could come out with a bit more of a buffer."

Northampton Saints interim coach Alan Gaffney said: “I thought we played pretty well in the first half. We were in the game obviously so to concede that try right on half time was disappointing.

“In the second half we didn’t have enough possession, we had the ability but we kept turning the ball over, we didn’t value it highly enough.

“Defensively I thought we did a pretty good job, the effort was pretty good but we didn’t show much smartness in the way we attacked.”
