Wasps put Worcester Warriors to the sword

Wasps kept up the pressure on Saracens at the top of the table when they claimed a 26-12 victory over Worcester Warriors at Sixways on Sunday.

A big win for Wasps would have seen them leapfrog Sarries to the top of the table. Whereas at the other end, Worcester were looking for a victory to widen the gap between themselves and Bristol.

It was Wasps who opened the scoring. A loose pass from Worcester was gathered by Wasps centre Brendan Mackan and he had an easy run in under the sticks.

Warriors weren't rattled and opened their account with a penalty from the boot of young fly-half Jamie Shillcock. Rob Miller slotted a penalty for Wasps before Shillcock added his second to continue the battle from the tee.

The two kickers continued to exchange points, with two further kicks from Miller and one form Shillcock giving Wasps a 16-9 lead at the half hour mark.

Despite Wasps attacking pressure, Worcester continued to stay in touch. Shillcock's fourth penalty of the afternoon reduced the visitors lead to four points. But Wasps continued to push on, with another Miller penalty re-establishing their seven point lead, Worcester's ill discipline was proving costly.

Wasps came out of the blocks running in the second half, with young talented scrum-half Dan Robson powering through the Worcester defence to dot down under the posts for his sides second try.

After their try, Wasps essentially pusher for a further score but were unable to break the Worcester line. Worcester spent the majority of the second half on the back-foot. Neither side was able to add to their total for the remainder of the second half.

The win moves Wasps up to second just a point behind Saracens. For Worcester, their seventh defeat of the season keeps them second from bottom, eight points behind Sale.
