Ward laments Harlequins’ performance

Harlequins forward Dave Ward says his side must improve after their European Champions Cup round 2 defeat against Wasps this weekend.

Speaking to Quins’ official website, Ward said his side “didn’t get things right” on the day.

“Wasps are a momentum team and we gave them far too much momentum, we gave them very easy tries from a lineout, a rolling maul, a charge down and an intercept,” he explained.

“If you give any team gifts like that, then you’ll always be chasing a game. The harder we tried, the worse it got.

“I can’t say that it was a lack of effort, but we just didn’t get things right, across the team, 1 to 23, myself included, we have to have a long hard look at ourselves from this.

“Worcester will be coming to The Stoop next week and they will be taking a lot of positives. We have to bounce back, and we have to do it quickly.

“I believe Wasps are the only team in the history of the European tournament to qualify for the knock out stages having lost the first two matches, it is possible, but we have it all to do.

“The one thing about our group is that everyone can beat everyone and if we get a good run and win the next four matches, you never know. But we are under no illusions that this will be very very tough.

“We will have to take each game as it comes, but also we need to enjoy the Champions Cup. We need to remember how hard we worked in the league last year to get into the Champions Cup.

“Ulster will be coming to us in December and we want a packed out Stoop to get behind us, and we in turn need to show what we are capable of, which is not what happened against Wasps.”
