Wales call up Morgan from U20s

Wales U20 centre Tyler Morgan has been withdrawn from the World Rugby U20 Championship squad and will be included in the extended senior Rugby World Cup training squad which will not be announced in full until next month.

The Wales senior squad management have taken the decision after the confirmation that the Wales and British and Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies will miss the Rugby World Cup after suffering a knee injury.

The decision to withdraw Morgan from the U20 squad and announce his inclusion in the extended senior group will ensure his availability for the Rugby World Cup preparations.

Morgan signed a National Dual Contract in 2014 and was part of Wales’ Six Nations squad. His Dragons team-mate Barney Nightingale will replace him in the Wales U20 Squad.

Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland said: “Although we are disappointed by the injury to Jonathan Davies we are delighted to have a player of Tyler’s calibre and potential to call on.

“It is unfortunate that he will miss out on the World Rugby U20 Championship but the decision we have taken now will give him the chance to focus entirely on this opportunity.

“I want to thank the U20 coaching and management team for responding so positively to our request and this is another example of how our pathway and National Dual Contract structure works to the benefit of Welsh international rugby.”

Wales U20 team manager Mark Taylor said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for Tyler, we wish him all the very best over the summer and it also gives Barney Nightingale the opportunity to further develop his rugby at the World Rugby U20 Championship.”
