The road to recovery has begun for injured Springbok number eight Duane Vermeulen after he underwent successful knee surgery on Thursday.

The injury forced Vermeulen to withdraw from the Springbok squad for their Rugby Championship opener against Argentina.

The injury, which Vermeulen suffered while playing for his club Toulon, was a recurrence of an old injury to the meniscus in his right knee. MRI scans showed he would require surgery to repair the damage. The procedure was done at a hospital in Toulon and Vermeulen tweeted a picture of himself after he came out of surgery.

¬†According to a statement from Toulon, Vermeulen will be out of action “for a few weeks”.
