Cheetahs captain Francois Venter could make an earlier than expected return to Super Rugby as he continues to recover from ankle surgery.
Venter underwent the surgery in December and began working out in the gym shortly afterwards. While he still wears a moonboot, he should know by next week when he will be able to return to full training with his team-mates.
The Cheetahs convened for the first time this year on Tuesday.
"The rehabilitation is going well and there is a good chance I will be ready to play by the end of February," Venter told Netwerk24.
"I'm seeing my doctor on Monday next week and will then have a clearer idea of where I stand."
Cheetahs coach Franco Smith is pleased with the progress Venter has been making.
"Look, it hasn't been that long since the surgery, but we are confident Francois will be ready at the end of February. But we'll have to wait and see," Smith said.
