Ulster will be without star back Jared Payne for this weekend's Pro12 clash against Welsh region Cardiff Blues.

Payne suffered a hip injury in the draw against Scarlets.

Alternate midfield options Darren Cave and Rory Scholes are both doubtful for Saturday's match as well, as the province's injury list grows.

Ruan Pienaar underwent a scan on Monday to determine the extent of his knee injury, with an update expected on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Iain Henderson has an ongoing hip injury that hasn't responded to a conservative management programme. He will undergo hip surgery on 25th September after a period of intense rehab.
