Toulouse coach Jean-Baptiste Elissalde admitted his players had been given a kick up the backside before their big win over Castres.

Toulouse coach Jean-Baptiste Elissalde admitted his players had been given a kick up the backside before their big win over Castres.

The former France scrum-half, who looks after the Toulouse backs, was clearly relieved by the 35-6 success, where Toulouse were dominant up front and dangerous in the backline.

Gael Fickou, Jean-Marc Doussain, Maxime Medard and Sebastien Bezy scored the four tries as they claimed a bonus-point win to move top of the table ahead of a trip to La Rochelle next weekend.

And after a tricky season last year, where they scraped into the Top 14 play-offs and underwhelmed in the big matches, Elissalde has warned his players that they need to maintain this form throughout the year.

“What pleased me was the players managed to react after an off-day against Oyonnax,” Elissalde told Rugbyrama.

“I want to congratulate William Servat and the forwards for their work. We didn't do anything new, but with a better set-piece, it's easier. It makes things a lot easier and solves a lot of problems.

“I liked the desire the players showed after the break. They could have settled for where they were but they kept the pressure on.

“We're working hard, putting in a lot of work but sometimes we've lacked a little commitment. Like with children, we gave them a bit of a kick up the backside and they responded.

“If it's just a reaction then we will find ourselves in the same position as last year: it will be frustrating, long and we'll never be in the clear. If the players realise the potential they have and take the desire they show in training, it will be a better season.

“We won't get carried away with this win, in the same way we didn't drop our heads after last weekend.

“We are going to try to keep showing the same desire to at least stay at this level, otherwise we will have a few more disappointments.”
