Toulouse returned to the number one spot of the Top 14 thanks to a 22-9 win over Clermont at the Stade Ernest Wallon on Saturday.
The result was never in doubt after the hosts established a 15-3 lead at half-time courtesy of tries to centre Yann David and winger Timoci Matanavouburst in the third and 39th minutes respectively.
Fly-half Luke McAlister converted Matanavou's try and also added a further penalty as Toulouse took control of proceedings.
Clermont pivot Brock James managed a three-pointer in the first half and then slotted two more after the break to reduce Toulouse's lead.
But Toulouse full-back Clement Poitrenaud dampened the visitors' hopes of a comeback after slicing through the Clermont defence for his side's third try. McAlister was once again on target with the extras.
And when Clermont replacement Alexandre Lapandry was sin-binned with seven minutes to go, the visitors were staring defeat in the face.
