Toulon defeat champions in Paris

Toulon secured a first win of the season by defeating reigning Top 14 champions Stade Français 20-13 away in Paris.

A late score from World Cup joker Lachie Turner sealed a valuable win for Toulon on the road as they gained some form of revenge for their Top 14 semi-final defeat to the same opponent last season.

The visitors opened the scoring through veteran Fijian winger Sireli Bobo going under the posts after good work from Willie du Plessis.

Juan Smith's penalty win at the breakdown earned Jonathan Pélissié a 40-metre attempt which the scrum-half converted to give Toulon a useful 10-0 lead early on.

Jules Plisson soon responded with his first penalty to get Stade up and running. The France fly-half went close to scoring a try for his side before his opposite man Du Plessis was sent to the sin-bin.

Three more points from Plisson closed the gap before the hosts struck with their first try.

Strong carries from Jeremy Sinzelle and Djibril Camara created the chance for Raphaël Lakafia to crash over as Plisson converted to give Stade Français a 13-10 advantage going into half-time, after Pélissié missed his second penalty attempt.

Both sides produced a high number of mistakes after the break before Xavier Chiocci received Toulon's second yellow card to put them back to 14 men.

Plisson couldn't convert the penalty but Du Plessis was more successful after taking over from Pélissié, levelling the score at 13-13.

Du Plessis went on to hit the post as each team looked for a breakthrough, but it didn't come until the 75th minute.

Steffon Armitage was stopped just short of the line by the home defence, forcing Toulon to put the ball through hands towards the opposite corner where Turner touched down, with the conversion from Du Plessis making it 20-13 and sealing the win.
