The Top 14 will introduce a relegation play-off from the 2017/18 campaign, which will see the second last team have a chance of survival.

LNR announced the decision on Saturday which means for example this season Agen would meet the team that finished second in Pro D2.

“This reform is aimed at reducing the pressure in Top 14 linked to the risk of relegation so as to encourage attacking play and risk-taking with the use of young players, as well as securing clubs’ spending and their economic models,” read a statement from the league’s organisers.

This past season, Agen and Oyonnax were relegated to the Pro D2, with Lyon and Bayonne replacing them in the top flight for 2016/17’s term.
