South African television match official Shaun Veldsman was assaulted after Saturday's Super Rugby clash between the Stormers and Blues in Cape Town.
According to South African media reports, Veldsman was attacked in his car on a highway while returning home at around 9pm.
Andy Colquhoun, Saru's head of corporate affairs, revealed that Veldsman's window on the driver's side was smashed and he was stabbed him with a sharp object.
"He has a hole in his lung after being stabbed," Colquhoun told Netwerk24.
Veldsman escaped from the vehicle, before someone rescued him on the side of the road. He was admitted to the Stellenbosch Medi Clinic and was in a stable condition on Sunday.
Veldsman is set to do duty as TMO for Sunday's Six Nations clash between Ireland and England in Dublin. It is unclear, however, whether he will be able to travel overseas due to his injuries.
