Former Wales and Scarlets prop Rhys Thomas has undergone surgery to prepare for a heart transplant.

The 32-year-old was forced to retire from rugby in 2012 after he suffered a heart attack.

That happened while he was with the Scarlets, and he required a quadruple heart bypass operation.

His agent Christian Abt confirmed that he underwent surgery this week to prepare him for a heart transplant further down the line.

Thomas won seven caps for Wales starting in the Italy game of the 2008 Six Nations when Wales claimed the Grand Slam.
