Dimitri Szarzewski will join the French squad in Dublin as cover for Benjamin Kayser who is struggling with a quad injury.
The Racing-Métro hooker was left out of Philippe Saint-André's squad for the Six Nations, with Kayser and Guilhem Guirado the two hookers selected.
However Saint-André explained that Szarzewski was still very much in the coaching team's thoughts, and he could be back involved as soon as Saturday.
Kayser impressed off the bench last week, but felt a twinge in training and is now a doubt for the clash at the Aviva Stadium.
"Benjamin had an alert in his quadriceps yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. We'll make a decision in the week," confirmed Saint-André.
If fit, Kayser will take his place on the bench against Ireland, with Eddy Ben Arous the only new face in the starting lineup.
Szarzewski has not featured for les Bleus since last year's Six Nations, having been hampered by injury for much of 2014.
