Former Golden Lions Vodacom Cup coach Russell Winter has been appointed as the Stormers' forwards coach for the 2016 season.

The 40-year-old, who has been coaching the Lions' U21 and Vodacom Cup sides for the past five seasons, will join new Stormers head coach Eddie Jones' backroom staff and work alongside attack coach Robbie Fleck and defence coach Paul Treu.

According to a Golden Lions press release, Winter is severing ties with the Johannesburg-based union after an association which spanned 21 years – twelve as player and seven years in a coaching position.

Winter, who played in the back row, first donned the Red and White hooped jersey of the then Transvaal Craven Week team in 1994 and he represented the union's U21s in 1995 and 1996.

Winter went on to captain the Lions at Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup levels and skippered the Cats for a season before playing for the Sharks for a single season.

He also played for the Newcastle Falcons in England from 2006 to 2009.
