Highlanders manager Graham Purvis says Ben Smith should return home on Wednesday after being hospitalised with a leg infection.
Highlanders manager Graham Purvis said that full-back Ben Smith should return home on Wednesday after he was hospitalised with a leg infection.
The impressive All Black, who played in their recent 44-16 defeat to the Waratahs with the issue, apparently felt unwell that Saturday.
But the Highlanders stalwart decided to pull on the jersey once again, with Purvis hoping that the crowd favourite will soon be back with the team.
“We are hoping to get him back as soon as possible, which will probably be tomorrow morning,” he told stuff.co.nz, saying the team doctor was with Smith to monitor matters.
“Obviously with an elite athlete you have to be very careful about what they are taking.”
On Smith's availability ahead of Saturday against the Crusaders, Purvis said: “We live in hope.”
