With two wins from two matches, defending champions the Sharks are delighted with their start to their 2014 campaign.

After victories against Griquas and the Pumas – and nine points in the points standings from a possible 10 – they are one of three unbeaten sides in the Currie Cup competition and know that having passed the acid test, will be well-placed to continue to push for a good finish.

“We said that the first two weeks were always going to be the most important part of the Currie Cup and we've overcome those hurdles, so we're very happy with that,” assistant coach Sean Everitt told The Sharks' official website.

Having lost their big ball-carrying forwards to the Springboks and that physicality they brought, the opposition might expect the team to be a lot more back-oriented this campaign, yet three of their four tries against the Pumas came through collective forward efforts.

There is an element of unpredictability about this team which is always good, and difficult for the opposition to plan around.

“The composition of the team is a lot different to what it was in Super Rugby,” explained Everitt.

But it's still early days and the team is growing into a new style with new personnel (10 players have so far made their Currie Cup debuts for the Durban-based union already).

“We're trying to play with more width because we don't have the ball-carriers that we had, and I think the players are doing really well, and they're positive about the style of play.

“But it's a matter of just getting the detail right.

“We created a lot of opportunities on the weekend, but didn't quite finish them all off, so we'll have to work hard to get those options right.

“But we have to give credit to the Pumas' defence, they really defended well.

“We had to change a slightly in the second half and we went back to what we do really well.

“The forwards stood up and scored two tries from those mauls which is fantastic.”
