The Sharks have confirmed the departure of fly-half Fred Zeilinga to the Cheetahs and the arrival of Joe Pietersen ahead of the Currie Cup.

Zeilinga has been given an early release from his contract to join the Free State Cheetahs ahead of the start of the domestic tournament.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank Fred for his commitment and dedication to the Cell C Sharks over the past few years," said Sharks CEO John Smit.

"We wish him every success for this new chapter in his career and we look forward to seeing him further progress in Bloemfontein."

At the same time, the Sharks are pleased to announce that Pietersen, who can play full-back, wing and fly-half, will join the team at the end of May.

"This seasoned campaigner brings with him a wealth of experience and an astute knowledge of the game," read a Sharks press release.

"In amongst his role will be to provide the necessary mentorship and guidance to the talented young players in our Currie Cup squad, namely Innocent Radebe and Garth April."
