Scarlets edge Dragons in try fest

Two tries from Steffan Evans helped Scarlets to a 31-27 bonus point win over Newport Gwent Dragons at Parc y Scarlets.

Looking for their third consecutive league win, it was the home side who opened the scoring with a wonderful individual effort from Evans. The winger turned on the afterburners and dove over in the corner. Rhys Patchell added the extras from the touchline.

It was another piece of individual brilliance that saw the Dragons level. After a period of sustained pressure from the visitors, Hallam Amos came in from the left wing to power through the Scarlets defence. The Dragons took the lead just before the half hour mark with a penalty from Nick Macleod. Their second try followed shortly after.

A lovely grubber kick through from Amos was picked up by Adam Warren to score against his former club. And, just before half time, Warren crossed for his second. A wonderful pass from Angus O'Brien made the finish easy for Warren to dot down in the corner.

Scarlets hit back straight from the kick-off. In a game filled with brilliant scores, the man of the moment in Welsh rugby Liam Williams shrugged off the tackles of several Dragons defenders to stretch for the line. After a first half of such high intensity, the opening 15 minutes of the second was strewn with handling errors; with neither side able to take advantage.

Patchell cut the Dragons lead to three points with a penalty from in front of the posts on 55 minutes. On the hour, Scarlets took the lead. A mistake from the Dragons left Scarlets replacement scrum-half Jonathan Evans free on the blindside and he capitalised to score against his former club.

The home side secured the bonus point five minutes later. Evans scored his second of the evening after a wonderful offload from Scott Williams. But the Dragons weren't done. With nine minutes left on the clock, replacement Sarel Pretorius scored to reduce the gap to four points but the Dragons were unable to complete the comeback.

The win moves Scarlets up to seventh in the table, with the Dragons sitting in 10th.
