All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has cleared star centre Sonny Bill Williams to resume his boxing career in January.
Williams’ next fight is against American heavyweight Chauncy Welliver on January 31 in Sydney on a card which also features Wallabies fly-half Quade Cooper.
The All Blacks midfielder is unbeaten in six professional fights and revealed that he seeked Hansen’s permission before agreeing to his seventh bout.
“The major concern for myself was getting his approval,” Williams told AAP.
“He said that as long as I don’t get knocked out, he’s happy with it.
“So hopefully that’s the plan.”
Williams’ fight with Welliver will be his first foray into the ring since he beat veteran South African Frans Botha in controversial fashion in February 2013.
Cooper will also resume his boxing career and will fight on the undercard against a yet to be named opponent.
