Sarries stay grounded after record win

Saracens are not getting carried away despite equalling Munster’s European record of 13 consecutive wins with their victory over Sale at the weekend, says Schalk Burger.

The defending champions beat Sale Sharks 24-10 on Sunday to equal the record and will have an opportunity to surpass it when they face Scarlets in round 5 of the Champions Cup.

Burger has played in the last five of those 13 victories after joining Saracens at the start of the season, but he told epcrugby.com they won’t be getting ahead of themselves despite their run of good form.

“It speaks volumes of the team and the roll that we are on. We just have to keep working hard and not get ahead of ourselves,” Burger said.

The Springbok legend wom the Heineken Man of the Match award for his performance in Manchester.

“It was always going to be difficult after putting Sale under a lot of pressure last week. They didn’t let us down and they came out firing and it was only towards the 60th minute that we got our scrum and maul going and were able to put them away.”

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is well aware that the next two games will be crucial in clinching a quarter-final spot next year. He noted the Scarlets beat Toulon at home at the weekend and is another who won’t take anything for granted despite having an eight point cushion at the top of Pool 3.

“We’ve two difficult games to come in January to complete the pool and there are still points to be played for. We got a very different Sale Sharks tonight,” said McCall.

“They made it difficult for us. It wasn’t the greatest game to watch, but we stuck to our guns, dominated field position and got the win in the end.

“We had to stay in the fight and keep on doing the right things and it was a good win for us. It was a really game against a good Sale Sharks side.”
