SANZAAR to announce Super Rugby changes

SANZAAR have confirmed they will make an announcement on the future of Super Rugby and the tournament format on Sunday.

The announcement will be made via a press release at the conclusion of Round 7 on Sunday.

The SANZAAR executive committee met in London last month to try and find a solution to the problems associated with Super Rugby’s current 18-team conference format.

There has been speculation recently that the tournament will axe some teams after the tournament’s over-complicated structure, which was first used in 2016, received heavy criticism.

Under the conference format, teams with worse records than others are rewarded with home fixtures in the play-offs.

Australian and South African media reports have indicated that the imminent changes could see up to three teams from those two countries being axed from the tournament with the Western Force, Southern Kings, Cheetahs the most vulnerable.

SANZAAR chief excutive Andy Marinos will be available for comment via telephone in Sydney following the release of the statement between 09h00 and 10h00 Greenwich Mean Time.
